Prices are up about 57 cents a gallon — or 19% — from $2.94 a gallon on Feb. 23, two weeks earlier.

Households could also see prices rise elsewhere, economists said.

For example, rising jet fuel costs could filter into higher airfares ahead of the busy spring and summer travel seasons; more expensive diesel could feed into elevated food prices due to increased costs to transport food items to the grocery store, economists said.

A prolonged conflict that leads to a sustained increase in inflation would also complicate the Fed’s interest rate policy, economists said.

“I think the Fed sits on its hands and doesn’t move,” Zandi said. “In significant part because of the uncertainty created by the war.”

Impact depends on length, scale of supply shock

The ultimate impact depends on how long the conflict drags on, and to what extent it disrupts energy supplies from the Middle East, Seydl said.

The most likely scenario is a “severe but short-lived” conflict that lasts just a few weeks, and sees U.S. oil prices gradually drop back to around $60 by the end of 2026 — roughly where they were before the conflict, Stephen Brown and Thomas Ryan, North America economists at Capital Economics, wrote in a research note on Tuesday.

Read more CNBC personal finance coverageSocial Security 2027 COLA forecast may rise with high oil pricesYou can’t ‘borrow your way out of debt,’ expert says, but more people are tryingHere’s the inflation breakdown for February 2026 — in one chartSAVE plan used by millions of student loan borrowers is over, court ordersIdentity theft and your taxes: It’s ‘a terrible reverse lottery,’ one victim saysAs Iran war disrupts oil prices, consumers could be ‘hammered,’ economist saysMillion-dollar earners have already stopped paying into Social Security for 2026Women and the K-shaped economy: Lower pay, affordability issues reduce spendingSmall 401(k) accounts may follow workers to their next job — except Roth moneyIn a jobs apocalypse, look to ‘AI-proof’ skilled trades, career experts sayMiddle-income homebuyers have $30,000 more buying power than a year agoAverage IRS tax refund is up 10.6%, early filing data showsGOP ‘big beautiful bill’ to deal ‘shock’ to the ACA marketplace: health expertsAs millions claim Trump’s ‘no tax on overtime’ deduction, filers risk mistakesS&P 500 shrugs off 1% daily drops all the time. Morgan.

Without the “tariff shock” of 2025, the U.S. inflation rate would likely be back to target, he said.

The Supreme Court struck down a centerpiece of the Trump administration’s tariff agenda in February, ruling that tariffs levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 were illegal.

Trump cited the IEEPA as the legal backbone for a host of tariffs he put on imports from other nations, including a 10% baseline tariff on all U.S. trading partners and even higher duties on select nations.

Shortly after the ruling, the Trump administration introduced new tariffs under a separate legal justification, aiming to keep the effective tariff rate roughly equal to what it had been before the Supreme Court ruling.

Economists said there wouldn’t be much inflationary relief for consumers in the short term as a result.

For example, before the court ruling, the average effective tariff rate was 14.3%, the highest since 1939, according to the Yale University Budget Lab. Without that data, the BLS assumed that no price increases had taken place during the month for most categories of goods and services.

Taking that measurement quirk into account, the CPI inflation is likely around 2.7%, about 0.3 percentage point higher than reported Wednesday, said Zandi of Moody’s.

Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.

High gas prices are listed at Chevron gas station in Los Angeles on March 9, 2026, as gasoline…

[11
260894,259927,265215,18318,64,63,5833,15557,99,174,265033,4858,103583,64408,5834,2490,164,5062,259926,5465,243300,262517,247555,5575,247552,260889,115152,265217,265216,184,20726,84,9074,265218,9355,254054,576,243299,1064,1055,259924,265219,247551,165256,141003
0":"post-534400","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-lco26k","9":"tag-lco26q","10":"tag-ng26j","11":"tag-american-airlines-group-inc","12":"tag-au","13":"tag-australia","14":"tag-breaking-news-economy","15":"tag-breaking-news-politics","16":"tag-business","17":"tag-business-news","18":"tag-cf-industries-holdings-inc","19":"tag-chevron-corp","20":"tag-conocophillips","21":"tag-delta-air-lines-inc","22":"tag-donald-j-trump","23":"tag-donald-trump","24":"tag-economy","25":"tag-exxon-mobil-corp","26":"tag-ice-brent-crude-oct25","27":"tag-inflation","28":"tag-invesco-db-agriculture-fund","29":"tag-invesco-db-commodity-index-tracking-fund","30":"tag-invesco-db-oil-fund","31":"tag-iran","32":"tag-lp","33":"tag-marathon-petroleum-corp","34":"tag-moodys-corp","35":"tag-mosaic-co","36":"tag-nutrien-ltd","37":"tag-personal-finance","38":"tag-personal-saving","39":"tag-politics","40":"tag-prices","41":"tag-stephen-brown","42":"tag-tariff","43":"tag-teucrium-corn-fund","44":"tag-trade","45":"tag-tyson-foods-inc","46":"tag-united-airlines-holdings-inc","47":"tag-united-states","48":"tag-united-states-brent-oil-fund","49":"tag-united-states-gasoline-fund","50":"tag-united-states-oil-fund","51":"tag-valero-energy-corp","52":"tag-wti-crude-sep25
["GET
