{"id":536251,"date":"2026-03-12T20:25:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T20:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/536251\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T20:25:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T20:25:08","slug":"ilia-topuria-is-an-exceptional-threat-to-islam-makhachev-says-ufc-welterweight-veteran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/536251\/","title":{"rendered":"Ilia Topuria is an &#8216;exceptional&#8217; threat to Islam Makhachev, says UFC welterweight veteran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ilia Topuria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjpenn.com\/mma-news\/ufc\/islam-makhachev-slams-ilia-topuria-and-his-fat-ass-manager-one-day-you-will-get-what-you-asked-for\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will not be facing<\/a> Islam Makhachev at UFC Freedom 250, but he\u2019d be an \u201cexceptional\u201d challenge if the bout ever materializes.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Colby Covington believes, as he told <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2026\/03\/12\/ufc-colby-covington-opinion-prediction-ilia-topuria-vs-islam-makhachev-welterweight-title\/89114449007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MMAJunkie<\/a> that he feels Topuria vs. Makhachev is the matchup to make down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the best fight was going to be the Topuria fight, but obviously that fight didn\u2019t come together,\u201d Covington said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to unify the title with Gaethje which is cool, but I think that\u2019s the most high-level fight the welterweight division could have done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Topuria matches up exceptional against Makhachev. He\u2019s a big, strong guy, he\u2019s a low center gravity so, he\u2019s going to very hard to take down and hold down. Of course, we know how explosive his striking is. So, hopefully they can make that fight before their careers end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Topuria will face Justin Gaethje in an undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship fight at the White House on June 14. \u201cEl Matador\u201d is the current 155-pound titleholder. Gaethje captured interim gold at UFC 324 with his unanimous decision win over Paddy Pimblett.<\/p>\n<p>UFC booked an interim title fight due to the fact that Topuria was on a brief hiatus. Once personal matters cleared up, Topuria signed on for the UFC Freedom 250 bout against Gaethje.<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on the \u201cAnik &amp; Florian Podcast,\u201d Topuria\u2019s manager Malki Kawa revealed that the money offered for a fight against Makhachev wasn\u2019t satisfactory. He insisted that\u2019s why Topuria accepted the Gaethje fight instead.<\/p>\n<p>UFC CEO Dana White recently told reporters that Makhachev is dealing with a hand issue. White isn\u2019t sure when Makhachev will be ready to return to the Octagon.
