Former Australian of the Year Grace Tame has lost all speaking engagements for the rest of the year \u2013 blaming a \u201csmear campaign\u201d against her following a controversial chant she led at a protest.<\/p>\n
At the No to Violence national conference in Hobart on Thursday, Ms Tame announced she would not be speaking at any more events this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is my last presentation of the year and it\u2019s only March,\u201d Ms Tame told the audience, adding that she felt she was \u201cup against a well-oiled political machine\u201d.<\/p>\n
Her comments come amid controversy over her participation in a Sydney protest against the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog, where she led a chant of \u201cglobalise the intifada\u201d, a slogan some activists use to call for international support for Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation.<\/p>\n
At the conference, the child safety advocate stressed she does not support violence or hatred in any form, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.<\/p>\n
Her participation in the rally had already drawn criticism from some Jewish groups.<\/p>\n
Last month, the Australian Jewish Association called for her appearance at an International Women\u2019s Day event in Bendigo to be cancelled. <\/p>\n
The organiser, Be. Bendigo, declined the request, stating it was committed to \u201chosting respectful, constructive conversations\u201d.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Ms Tame posted on Instagram that both \u201cintifadas\u201d began as peaceful protests, boycotts, and labour strikes in response to Israel\u2019s \u201congoing violent oppression\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a post last week, she said she had lost three speaking engagements on the theme of child safety due to \u201can ongoing media smear campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n
The issue has also entered political debate. The NSW Government is considering banning the phrase under proposed hate speech laws, while it has already been outlawed in Queensland when used to menace or offend.<\/p>\n
Despite the controversy, Ms Tame\u2019s Hobart presentation focused heavily on the dangers posed by artificial intelligence in the creation of child abuse material. <\/p>\n
