{"id":536492,"date":"2026-03-12T22:57:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/536492\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T22:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:57:13","slug":"experts-say-pest-control-still-possible-as-australia-wide-ban-on-commercial-rat-baits-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/536492\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts say pest control still possible as Australia-wide ban on commercial rat baits looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Controlling and eliminating pests is still well and truly viable, experts say, despite the looming ban on over-the-counter sales of popular rat poisons across Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (AVPMA) has certified second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-11\/rat-bait-rodenticides-restricted-under-new-regulation\/106437604\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106437604\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as restricted chemical products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The restrictions mean products containing those substances \u2014including many popular rat baits \u2014 would require a specific license to legally purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SGARs pose a threat to many native predators because the poisons are so potent that they kill not only rodents with a single dose, but also the animals that hunt them for food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">First-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs) differ in that it takes numerous doses for the baits to become lethal because it breaks down in the body faster, making secondary poisoning significantly less likely.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Packets of ratsak on a shelf.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8b47e480cb46095714697e78baabe67c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are readily available for purchase. (ABC South West: Madigan Landry)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Toxic time bombs&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Curtin ecologist Bill Bateman said the impact of second-generation baits on birds of prey was &#8220;profound.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re effectively little toxic time bombs just waiting to kill the next predator,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, go for those first-generation baits, typically things like warfarin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Bateman said the removal of SGARs from the environment would boost native predator populations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have things like goannas and snakes and birds of prey, those are going to be the best thing for reducing mice around houses,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The removal of the SGARs from the ecosystem will, we hope, have a fantastic knock-on effect and take away just one of the many threats that face our native wildlife.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A grey tawny frog mouth owl siting on a branch with a grey mouse hanging out of its beak.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e653095074ee040492e88279422fc05b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Birds of prey like owls are susceptible to secondary poisoning. (ABC South West: Madigan Landry)<\/p>\n<p>Industry pest control viable<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The licensing process will allow industries where pest control is critical, such as farming or mining, to continue using the restricted poisons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Edith Cowan University biologist Rob Davis said while use would probably be allowed to continue, there were alternatives to SGARs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Identify the scale and nature of the problem, try to do things like rodent proofing, try small-scale approaches such as targeted trapping, identify where infestations are,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then consider baiting and obviously consider first-generation baits, or alternatives, like non-anticoagulant products altogether.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New silos at the Ord District Co-operative\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bc2f339e5d7a3f8db12a3f1972464e72.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Farm silos can be kept safe from pests by ensuring feed is kept in rat-proof containers.
