Richmond coach Adem Yze cut a \u201cbitterly disappointed\u201d figure post-match, lamenting his side\u2019s squandered Round 1 opportunity.<\/p>\n
The Tigers cut their halftime deficit to within a kick against Carlton at the MCG on Thursday but were ultimately to blame for the narrow defeat due to their own inefficiency.<\/p>\n
Yze said the control Richmond had in the second half was the core of his frustration.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah no doubt, the way we played in the second half I did,\u201d Yze said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first half I didn\u2019t, we weren\u2019t up to standard and our players know that. We just obviously gave them too much of a start.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a coach, at halftime when you\u2019re that far behind, or things aren\u2019t working for you, all you can ask for is a response.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really proud of the boys\u2019 effort to provide that and give ourselves a chance to win the game, but when you look at the numbers, you do feel like you left one out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Experienced spearhead Tom Lynch punctuated the Tigers\u2019 wasted chances, booting 2.7 from 10 shots on goal.<\/p>\n
But Yze saw Lynch\u2019s performance differently and said he would have more reason for concern if Lynch had created fewer opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think most forwards in the comp in the first half of the season, if you\u2019re having 10 shots on goal you\u2019re doing something right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe understands his execution was off but it was really blustery out there, both teams probably missed ones they would take, I think on TV it would\u2019ve looked a lot easier than it was out there.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was double teamed a lot to get those opportunities. Like I said, you\u2019d be pretty rapt to get that amount of shots in the first game of the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe looked really potent last week as well, the cream on the top \u2014we can fix that easily. I would be more worried if he wasn\u2019t getting those opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lynch also gave away five free kicks, including one on the goal line while Tim Taranto was taking a set shot.<\/p>\n
Yze moved quickly to defend his forward again, labelling Lynch at his most potent when he\u2019s playing with a fierce edge.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that\u2019s when he plays his best, when he plays on edge \u2014 I think that\u2019s why he\u2019s had 10 shots on goal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll back him in, there\u2019s probably some opportunity for him to get some free kicks (as well). They put a lot of time and effort into him, so yeah, I think 10 shots on goal speaks for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n
