Photo: AFL MEDIA

Timing can be everything in sport, and Nick Larkey concedes that from a career perspective, his probably couldn’t have been a lot worse.

When the kid from Oakleigh Chargers was taken by North Melbourne late in the 2016 national draft, the Roos had played in finals four of the previous five seasons, and had twice even played off for a grand final spot.

Nine seasons later, that finals tally hasn’t changed, and that is something of which, like everyone associated with the club, Larkey, a 134-game player and now also new North Melbourne captain, is painfully aware.

“It hasn’t been easy,” he smiles ruefully, speaking with ESPN ahead of Sunday’s season-opener against Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. “Now Gold Coast has made it, every other team has played finals since then. So yeah, it’s been tough.”

North Melbourne fans know the numbers all too well. Just 20 wins from 130 games over the last six seasons, a miserable strike rate of just 15 per cent. But even last year’s five wins and a draw, the Roos’ best return since 2019, is enough to keep the fires of hope alight.

“I finally feel our list has enough talent on it,” he says. “Part of it now really is the mental aspect of it. You know, if we can get a few wins and build that belief as a group.

“Last year was a good step forward. We were a lot more competitive in games, and took it up to some really good teams. We did win more games than we have in previous years, even though it was still a low tally. But, you know, the more wins you get, the more belief you’ve got in what you can do as a group. I’m pretty confident we’ll improve again this year.”

But Larkey’s smart enough to know the consequences for the Roos if they don’t will be dire. Because it’s fair to say the natives at Arden Street are, to say the least, restless.

There’s been grumblings about board challenges and coach Alastair Clarkson’s tenure all off-season, and they amped up again after the Roos were smashed by Melbourne in the first practice hit-out a few weeks ago.

As silly as it may sound given the lack of stakes attached, North’s subsequent vastly-improved showing in a one-point win over Collingwood at Ballarat a fortnight ago might have bought even a little time against the increasing noise. But the Roos need to hit the ground running this season.

The good news is a draw – Port Adelaide, West Coast, Essendon and Carlton in the first four rounds – which may allow them to do so. And Larkey has a firm belief that if things can click for the raft of talented younger players, the Roos can not only rise, but rise significantly.

“We all want to take a quantum leap, not just make incremental improvements,” he says. “If we can finish around that mark where we’re competing to get into that wildcard round, yeah, that would be a big leap, obviously.”

PLEASE HELP US CONTINUE TO THRIVE BY BECOMING AN OFFICIAL FOOTYOLOGY PATRON. JUST CLICK THIS LINK.

But it’s ambition based on more than mere hope, he insists.

“We’ve got a lot of guys coming into that 50-100 game range now, and they’ve now got enough experience at the level that they should be feeling more confident in themselves. If you can hold that group together and get a bit of consistency, that’s when players start to really kick off in their careers.”

They’re familiar names now. Harry Sheezel, already a dual best and fairest winner and Larkey’s vice-captain, but still just 21. George Wardlaw, 21. Colby McKercher, 20. Finn O’Sullivan, still 19. And so on. “The thing I’ve noticed most this pre-season is those younger guys looking (physically) less like under 18 type players and more like seasoned AFL bodies.”

Then there’s the likes of Paul Curtis, long established as a leading Roo, but still only just turned 23. Larkey waxes lyrical about both he and O’Sullivan, particularly.

“I think Finn’s got the potential to be a real star for us,” he says. “He’s a really good teammate, he’s got a good balance of defensive and offensive focus, he’s silky with some of the skills he has, and he’s agile and a good height, so he’s been really impressive.”

And Curtis? “I think he’s up there with the very best players in the game. When we get a bit more publicity and start playing a bit more prime time, I think people really realise just how special a player he is. He’s as good as any small forward in the game, I reckon, powerful, strong. He was in All-Australian form last year until he got suspended. The more ball we can get in there, the more the footy world will see just how good a player he is.”

North’s leading goalkicker of the past five years obviously wouldn’t mind a bit more regular delivery himself, either, particularly given his new leadership role. How effective can a captain be out on the ground if he’s freezing away in a forward zone which isn’t being serviced?

“It’s a good question,” he says. “I understand that where I play, you can drift in and out of games a bit. So my challenge will be when I’m not around the ball, how can I still impact and influence the team? And a lot of that comes through your body language, the energy you bring to the group, what you say to them, and then when it’s your turn, taking your opportunity.”

And Sunday is a big opportunity for the Roos, and for their new skipper. North Melbourne’s record against Port Adelaide is diabolical. They’ve won just once in the past dozen meetings, back in 2019 in Larkey’s 22nd senior game, when he kicked a then career-high five goals.

But like North, Port goes into this season-opener not knowing quite what to expect, coming off a disappointing year and under the charge of a new coach in Josh Carr. There’ll at least this week be some anxiety in both dressing rooms.

And as Larkey makes his debut as the Kangaroos’ skipper, perhaps, finally, in his 10th year in the caper, that might be a case of his timing actually being good.

This article first appeared at ESPN.

New North Melbourne captain Nick Larkey gets some premiership advice from Brisbane’s Harris Andrews at AFL captain’s day…

[560
638,64,63,55,639,85
post-538572","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-afl","tag-afl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australian-football-league","tag-australianfootballleague","tag-sports
["GET
