(Supplied: Quondong Station)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The goats are hurting the land, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you start looking at the carrying capacity of that fragile land out there, the goats are a serious, serious problem,&#8221; Ms Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Goats have been on the station since Ms Bishop&#8217;s husband, Joe, purchased it in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the population has gotten &#8220;out of control&#8221; in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Maybe it&#8217;s to do with the fact that the price of goat meat dropped and it just wasn&#8217;t worth the cost of mustering them,&#8221; Ms Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At one stage, probably around 18 months ago, we got $1,500 for a truckload of goats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"four small feral goats by the side of a bichumen road\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/5fc32e1ba0d8b70a7838752cda49ad1a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Parts of South Australia have become overrun by feral goats. (ABC Rural: Isabella Kelly\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That money is shared with the professionals hired to round up the animals, a costly process for the station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got the guys on the motorbikes, and you&#8217;ve got the fuel that they&#8217;re using. You&#8217;ve got trucks that truck the goats back from the water yards where they&#8217;re caught into a holding paddock \u2026 You&#8217;ve got to accommodate the mustering teams,&#8221; Ms Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is it worth the effort at that stage? Probably not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But for Quondong Station, removing the goats is not about income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We need to reinvigorate our land, improve our land, try and get it back to what it should be because you can see the devastation of goats all over the world,&#8221; Ms Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p>A $106m pig problem<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Goats are not the only feral animal posing problems: feral pigs, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2024-12-06\/spread-of-feral-pigs-causes-alarm-flinders-ranges-sa\/104689654\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104689654\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recorded in parts of the northern Flinders Ranges for the first time in 2024<\/a>, are spreading around the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jodie Gregg-Smith, the general manager of the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, which looks after more than half of SA, said the board had been noticing &#8220;a gradual increase&#8221; in pig numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Annually, Ms Gregg-Smith said feral pigs were having a $106-million impact on the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The increased resilience of pigs has meant that those numbers continue to increase, despite the integrated approach that we&#8217;re applying,&#8221; Ms Gregg-Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re able to breed in hardier conditions than they ever have before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They have big litters, usually of around 13 piglets, and they can have multiple litters in a year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman wearing glasses smiling at the camera, taken in an outdoor environment\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1a4a577e9c82a6ff41d0a25944b9373b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jodie Gregg-Smith is the general manager of SA Arid Lands Landscape Board. (Supplied: Dr Christopher O&#8217;Bryan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is not just landholders spotting the pigs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These animals are turning up in townships like Hawker and Quorn from goodness knows where. Coober Pedy even had feral pigs wandering in and out at a point,&#8221; Ms Gregg-Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are getting hardier. Just like goats are, just like camels are, just like other large feral herbivores are.&#8221;Invasion of deer<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Feral deer are one of the state&#8217;s &#8220;most pervasive pests&#8221;, according to Invasive Species Council&#8217;s senior advocate James Johnston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Not only do they threaten our environment and damage our precious habitats, but they cost farmers millions of dollars in lost production,&#8221; Mr Johnston said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of infrastructure damage to that too, damage to fencing and roads, and a big safety risk as people can hit them on the roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A deer with antlers leaps over fence with dry pasture in background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1c09a429c001f1e2e8b236513f64232f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A feral deer jumps a fence on a property in south east SA.
