(ABC Rural: Jessica Schremmer)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They are a common part of diets and traditional medicine in Asian cultures partly due to their health benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1756464620304291\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> investigating jujubes found the fruit was a functional food, boasting nutritional values of antioxidants, fibre, and minerals like magnesium and calcium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fresh fruit has 20 times more vitamin C than any other citrus fruit,&#8221;  study author and food scientist Ahmed K. (ABC Rural: Jessica Schremmer)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For one of the industry&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-08-14\/jujube-farmers-turn-waste-fruit-into-pantry-staple\/12534778\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/12534778\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pioneering growers Ben Waddelow<\/a>, it was the horticultural challenge that attracted him to growing jujubes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was something new and different. (ABC Landline: Kerry Staight)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">South Australian Jujube Growers&#8217; Association deputy chair Jody Miltenoff said a national body was needed to establish export markets and build effective communication programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For the industry to move forward, it needs to be a united front because the beauty of our jujubes going into the Asian market is we are counter-seasonal,&#8221; Mr Miltenoff said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He explained that while some growers were already exporting to Hong Kong and Singapore, a concerted effort could lead to opening exports to Vietnam and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>From niche to &#8216;cult following&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One industry that&#8217;s grown <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-06-22\/how-the-avocado-smashed-its-way-into-australias-heart\/8634456\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/8634456\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from the &#8220;backyard&#8221; to large-scale commercial production<\/a> is Australia&#8217;s avocados.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Once a fruit consumers didn&#8217;t pay much attention to, it smashed its way into people&#8217;s hearts across the globe. It&#8217;s got more potassium than bananas,&#8221; Ms Tucker-Boehm said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, it almost has a cult following.
