{"id":540411,"date":"2026-03-14T18:00:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T18:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/540411\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T18:00:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T18:00:28","slug":"heath-ledgers-perth-talent-vivian-poulton-agent-chronicles-his-journey-to-oscars-fame-and-elordi-comparisons-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/540411\/","title":{"rendered":"Heath Ledger\u2019s Perth talent Vivian Poulton agent chronicles his journey to Oscars fame and Elordi comparisons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Heath Ledger\u2019s first ever talent agent has opened up about the Perth-born actor\u2019s teenage years, revealing in an exclusive interview with PerthNow the inside story of how he got his start in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Recalling her former client\u2019s early life as a budding actor, Vivian Poulton unveiled rarely seen teenage headshots and audition notes penned to the future star before he\u2019d made it in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Incidentally, it was Ledger\u2019s sister Kate who had initially engaged her services to discuss a potential career as an actor in the mid-late 90s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But after a brief conversation, it was thought her younger brother might be a more likely candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cHe was doing Hamlet at Guildford Grammar, so we went out and had a look at that. And he was a standout, in my opinion, even in a smaller role, he was playing Laertes, and we thought he was fabulous,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773511220_495_b3a699accc3571b58f9e34526aa0e514e616aedc.jpg\" alt=\"Heath Ledger in Hamlet Picture: Andrew Ritchie\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconHeath Ledger in Hamlet Andrew Ritchie Credit: Andrew Ritchie\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Ms Poulton steered the Perth branch of Frog Management \u2014 now Artist Management Australia (AMA) \u2014 from its inception in 1980, but maintains a looser connection today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Hailed as talent agency \u201croyalty\u201d by her peers, Ms Poulton fuelled the early years of Isla Fisher, and was even asked by Hugh Jackman if she\u2019d consider representing him following his WAAPA days should he ever return to Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">After meeting Ledger\u2019s parents, and signing him to her agency, she said the emerging talent secured virtually every role he auditioned for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cGreat casting,\u201d she teased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">As a talented hockey player and athlete, popular student, and generally well-rounded teen, Ms Poulton said what set him apart in the eyes of casting directors was his attitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He did not present as a desperate young actor, and simply let his innate charm shine through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cApart from being so good looking, those fabulous dimples, smile, he\u2019s just charismatic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773511222_623_a6ed854d649f9081d05ff764cb249c5d1aae07e9.jpg\" alt=\"Heath Ledger Picture: Andrew Ritchie\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconHeath Ledger Andrew Ritchie Credit: Andrew Ritchie\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cEven as a young guy: charisma, you think you grow into it, like a Colin Firth or someone like that. But he had it as a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">One of Ledger\u2019s first acting gigs was a role in WA-filmed 90s series Ship to Shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Soon after, he appeared alongside The Castle\u2019s Michael Caton in a Chicken Treat TV commercial, and later Home and Away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">His breakthrough role in the US came in 1997 as the lead in the historical fantasy series Roar, produced by Universal Studios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Playing Conor, an Irish Celtic prince in 400 AD, Ms Poulton admitted he never should have been considered for the part.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773511223_417_009bf53bb21632a185763fb285270c1133f33724.jpg\" alt=\"Heath Ledger Picture: Andrew Ritchie\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconHeath Ledger Andrew Ritchie Credit: Andrew Ritchie\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">With a worldwide search to fill the role, a renowned Sydney casting director enquired if the Perth-based agent knew of any likely types.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI said, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019ve got this fabulous new kid Heath Ledger\u2019. And I lied to her. He had to be 19 or whatever it was, Heath was 17 or 18. She said, \u2018We\u2019ll test him, but don\u2019t f*** me around\u2019,\u201d Ms Poulton revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Ledger flew to the US to test for the part and eventually got it, with Ms Poulton suggesting it was \u201cthe beginning\u201d of his international success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The star\u2019s career snowballed from there, becoming a bankable lead after roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight\u2019s Tale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Soon finding management in the US, Ms Poulton became less involved with Ledger\u2019s professional life, but kept in touch from afar.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773511224_448_4ad7f5b22f956f1959a2d315d314d7cb9e7bc367.jpg\" alt=\"Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconHeath Ledger and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. Credit: Touchstone<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The local product famously won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, awarded posthumously in 2009 after his death exactly one month earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Grateful for what Ms Poulton had done for their loved one, Ledger\u2019s father Kim and sister Kate made a beeline for Ms Poulton to thank her at an exhibition showcasing his award in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Working closely with the respected talent agent for decades, Natalie Simpson took the reigns as director of AMA in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">She also oversees its drama school Perth Actors Studio in Osborne Park, headed by indie filmmaker and studio manager Chris Peters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773511225_707_296bf02d322a89e302879361c1c677da86caab4a.jpg\" alt=\"Natalie Simpson (director) of Artist Management and Vivian Poulton (founder) of Artist Management Australia Picture: Andrew Ritchie\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconNatalie Simpson (director) of Artist Management and Vivian Poulton (founder) of Artist Management Australia Andrew Ritchie Credit: Andrew Ritchie\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Ms Simpson has seen WA exports succeed abroad for years, and has championed next generation actors including Adelaide Kane (Grey\u2019s Anatomy), Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), and Sam Ireland (Itch).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">She said it\u2019s more than just talent fuelling Hollywood\u2019s love affair with Aussies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got a good sense of humour. We have a great working attitude as well, hard yakka. As a youth, he dreamed of winning an Oscar by the age of 28 \u2014 the same age as Ledger upon his passing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI\u2019m 28 years old and I got nominated 18 years to the day after he passed,\u201d he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cSo I\u2019d like to take this to say thank you Heath Ledger and for that inspiration. He was so good, he could pull it off,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBut I preferred him in Brokeback Mountain. That\u2019s more the boy I knew.
