Some of them were unusual. And some of them left me wondering whether the sport has drifted too far away from what made it great in the first place.

Heading into Sunday’s second round in China, the biggest discussion isn’t about which team looks strongest or which driver has early momentum. Instead, it’s about Formula One’s new overtaking system and whether it is actually good for the sport.

The new 50/50 power and battery overtake system was introduced with the intention of creating more action and giving drivers another tool when battling for position on track. In theory, it sounds like a way to improve racing. In reality, it has already divided the paddock.

Lewis Hamilton said he personally loved it. Others were far less convinced.

Reigning world champion Lando Norris was one of the most vocal critics after Melbourne, describing the new style of racing as chaos and saying drivers were waiting for something to go “quite horribly wrong” . Max Verstappen also raised concerns about the direction the sport is heading with this style of racing.

Watching it from the safety of my couch, I could understand exactly where Norris was coming from.

Camera IconLando Norris of Great Britain and McLaren walks in the Paddock. The skill of the driver, the balance of the car, tyre management, race craft and timing, that’s where the magic happens. When overtakes start to rely heavily on technology or artificial boosts, it can begin to feel a little manufactured.

That doesn’t mean change is always bad. Every sport evolves and F1 has never stood still. But sometimes the pursuit of more entertainment can risk taking away the very elements that made the sport compelling in the first place. And we’ve seen this over time with the sound and engines in these cars as one example.

One moment in Melbourne that really caught my attention was Oscar Piastri’s crash on the formation lap. For a driver of his calibre, that was extremely unusual.

These are the best drivers in the world. They operate at the absolute limit of control and concentration. Mistakes happen in racing of course, but seeing an incident before the race had even properly begun was surprising.

It may simply have been one of those things, but it did add to the sense that drivers are dealing with a lot in these new cars and systems before they’ve even reached the first corner under race conditions. The initial blame seemed to be mostly on Piastri before more came to light about his car’s tech fault with the new battery energy.

Another strange moment came during qualifying when commentators began questioning whether several cars had problems down the long straights at Albert Park. From the television coverage, it looked like cars were suddenly losing speed or struggling for power.

Camera IconMcLaren driver Oscar Piastri of Australia’s car is taken from the track. Credit: SCOTT BARBOUR/AP

Initially, it sounded like a mechanical issue. Later, it became clear that the battery systems were running out at certain points on the track. Visually and audibly, it didn’t look quite right, and that only added to the confusion around how the new system was playing out in real time.

Interestingly, both the Mercedes and Ferrari team principals seemed quite pleased with what they saw across the weekend. From their perspective, the racing created excitement, and fans appeared to enjoy the spectacle.

That’s fair enough. Teams will always look at the bigger strategic picture and how systems like this can create new tactical opportunities. But the drivers are the ones sitting in the cockpit.

When the current world champion openly warns of danger, it’s probably worth paying attention. Norris isn’t speaking from the outside. He’s the one racing wheel to wheel at 300kmh.

Now the championship heads to China, where we may get a clearer picture of how this system will really influence racing. The Shanghai circuit features one of the longest straights on the calendar, which could make the overtaking button even more significant.

Drivers who like the new system may see it as another weapon. Those who don’t may feel like they are being forced to adapt to something that changes the nature of the racing.

For Piastri, the Chinese Grand Prix will also be an opportunity to reset after a frustrating start to the season. Drivers of his quality don’t dwell on setbacks for long, but after an early exit in front of a home crowd there will no doubt be a strong desire to bounce back quickly.

Camera IconOscar Piastri of McLaren leaves the pits following the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. Credit: JOEL CARRETT/AAPIMAGE

Formula One has always evolved. Maybe drivers will adapt and the 2026 changes will become a natural part of the sport.

But if I’m being honest, watching Melbourne last weekend didn’t quite convince me.

The best F1 racing has always come from drivers pushing themselves and their cars to the absolute limit, finding a way past through skill, bravery and precision. Not simply pressing a button.

And if the reigning world champion is already questioning whether the racing is becoming artificial, that’s a conversation the sport needs to take seriously.

Formula One is back and, as far as season openers go, Melbourne delivered plenty of talking points.
