{"id":540981,"date":"2026-03-15T00:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T00:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/540981\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T00:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T00:55:08","slug":"more-iran-womens-soccer-players-decide-to-leave-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/540981\/","title":{"rendered":"More Iran women&#8217;s soccer players decide to leave Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE, Australia &#8212; Another three members of the Iran&#8217;s women&#8217;s soccer team who accepted refugee visas to stay in Australia have decided to return to their homeland, an Australian government minister said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The departure leaves three of an initial seven squad members in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overnight, three members of the Iranian Women&#8217;s Football Team made the decision to join the rest of the team on their journey back to Iran,&#8221; Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After telling Australian officials they had made this decision, the players were given repeated chances to talk about their options,&#8221; Burke added.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s team arrived in Australia for the Women&#8217;s Asian Cup last month, before the war in the Middle East began on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Iran&#8217;s players salute during the national anthem before the AFC Women&#8217;s Asian Cup match against the Philippines.\u00a0AFP<\/p>\n<p>Initially, six players and a support staff member from a squad list of 26 players <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48156225\/women-asian-cup-iranian-soccer-players-australian-federal-police-watch-daring-escape\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accepted humanitarian visas<\/a> to stay in Australia before the rest of the Iranian contingent flew from Sydney to Malaysia on March 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/48167227\/iran-player-changes-mind-asylum-australia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Another later changed her mind<\/a> and left Australia. Three left Sydney for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday night, a government official said. The rest of the team has remained in Kuala Lumpur since they left Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s Tasnim News Agency said the latest three to leave Australia were two players and the support staff member.
