(ABC News: Mackenzie Heard)<\/p>\n<p>Firearms laws revisited after Bondi massacre<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Following the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-21\/nsw-bondi-massacre-vigil-commemoration-jewish-community\/106168156\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106168156\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bondi terror attack,<\/a> national cabinet endorsed a proposal for the states to consider a range of reforms to strengthen firearms laws, including caps on individual gun ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In February, the Tasmanian government announced its response to the terror attack with new firearms laws, but didn&#8217;t include limits on individual gun ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, Minister Ellis told ABC Radio Hobart a cap on guns would &#8220;punish&#8221; responsible firearms owners in Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the reforms introduced by the government, which involve a buyback scheme, citizenship requirements for buying guns, and the reclassification of high-powered firearms, would focus on &#8220;taking firearms out of the hands of terrorists and criminals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One firearm in the hands of terrorists is more dangerous than 100 firearms in the hands of our farmers,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rifles on display at Tasmanian firearms seller.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/46a736ad2ef855310649c6d62f123388.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In Tasmania, there are 157,022 registered firearms, owned by 36,598 licence holders. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>Minister ridicules mandatory caps<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In his State of the State response earlier this month, Opposition Leader Josh Willie said Labor would work with the crossbench to push mandatory caps through parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Tasmania should not be an outlier on these national reforms because this Liberal government lacks the courage to act,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since then, Minister Ellis has ridiculed the policy proposal in a series of videos and posts shared to his Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He has urged his followers to sign a petition &#8220;opposing Labor&#8217;s caps on law-abiding firearms owners&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re going to be putting caps on Tasmanians. (AAP: Joel Carrett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement this morning, Mr Willie said Tasmanians deserved leadership on community safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Liberals want unlimited guns in the community.
