{"id":54229,"date":"2025-08-09T01:06:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T01:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/54229\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T01:06:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T01:06:27","slug":"cloudflare-and-perplexity-slug-it-out-over-alleged-ai-bot-block-evasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/54229\/","title":{"rendered":"Cloudflare and Perplexity slug it out over alleged AI bot block evasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is it deceptive, standards-violating content scraping or a security and internet infrastructure company on a crusade against artificial intelligence startups?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"ContentPlaceHolder1_ucArticle_imgImage\" width=\"748\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754701587_996_ImageResizer.ashx\" alt=\"Cloudflare and Perplexity slug it out over alleged AI bot block evasion\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That question has arisen after Cloudflare published a very\u00a0detailed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/perplexity-is-using-stealth-undeclared-crawlers-to-evade-website-no-crawl-directives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">report<\/a>\u00a0alleging that Perplexity AI engages in underhanded behaviour to content on sites, sparking a public row between the two companies.<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity AI has struck back against the accusations, and denied it is doing anything wrong, instead questioning Cloudflare&#8217;s competence when it comes to understanding what&#8217;s legitimate web traffic and what isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The background here is that Cloudflare has a commercial interest in bot management as a service for its customers.<\/p>\n<p>It recently launched &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/content-independence-day-no-ai-crawl-without-compensation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Content Independence Day,<\/a>&#8221; an initiative that enables over 2.5 million websites to block AI training crawlers, a move aimed at providing content creators more control over how their material is accessed by artificial intelligence companies.<\/p>\n<p>In the report, Cloudflare accused\u00a0Perplexity of having obscured their bots\u2019 crawling identities using multiple technical tricks including using different networks, faking the user-agent identifier to make it look like a web browser was accessing content, and ignoring the industry standard robots.text file to exclude automated scrapers.<\/p>\n<p>Cloudflare alleged this was done so as to circumvent website administrators\u2019 preferences to manage bot traffic, which can be substantial with tens of millions of requests a day and significantly add to data charges.<\/p>\n<p>That is not the case, Perplexity insists.<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity said Cloudflare had mischaracterised user-driven AI assistants as malicious bots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This controversy reveals that Cloudflare&#8217;s systems are fundamentally inadequate for distinguishing between legitimate AI assistants and actual threats,&#8221; Perplexity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/hub\/blog\/agents-or-bots-making-sense-of-ai-on-the-open-web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you can&#8217;t tell a helpful digital assistant from a malicious scraper, then you probably shouldn&#8217;t be making decisions about what constitutes legitimate web traffic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity said modern AI assistants go to relevant websites to read information needed that they don&#8217;t have, to present tailored summaries to users&#8217; questions.<\/p>\n<p>This is the traffic that Cloudflare said was generated by Perplexity bots ignoring webmasters&#8217; preferences to shut out AI crawlers.<\/p>\n<p>Cloudflare had also confused Perplexity with up to 6 million daily requests of unrelated traffic from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.browserbase.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">BrowserBase<\/a>, a third party service that provides web browsing for AI agents, Perplexity alleges.<\/p>\n<p>Cloudflare, meanwhile ,has de-listed Perplexity as one the vendor-declared bots for its bot management site.<\/p>\n<p>It has also updated its system heuristics to ensure that blocking of the bot by customers who wish to do so is effective.<\/p>\n<p>The AI company has been accused of similar behaviour in the past, with media outlets such as Forbes, Time Magazine and Wired accusing Perplexity of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/30\/perplexity-ai-to-share-revenue-with-publishers-after-plagiarism-accusations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">generating plagiarised material<\/a>\u00a0in its responses.
