A West Australian<\/a> study will research an alternative pain treatment for endometriosis including using extracts from aged garlic.<\/p>\n

One in seven women are expected to live with endometriosis, which often causes debilitating pain due to tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus.<\/p>\n

The Microvascular Modulation in Endometriosis (MMEND) study, conducted at the Curtin Medical Research Institute and Perron Institute, will research whether certain extracts pulled from aged garlic bulbs as well as certain amino acids can have an anti-inflammatory effect in patients, in turn minimising pain.<\/p>\n

Some participants will just receive one of the components while others will get a combination of both to see what treatment is most effective.<\/p>\n

Perron Institute and Curtin University head of neurovascular and metabolic diseases John Mamo said he is hopeful the treatment could be effective due to evidence pointing to endometriosis being an inflammatory condition, which may impair blood flow through capillary vessels.<\/p>\n

The trial was sparked when Professor Mamo was conducting a different study on migraine pain using a similar treatment, which led to female participants with endometriosis noticing a reduction in that pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the first migraine trial we conducted, we had some of our female participants anecdotally telling us that their endometrial pain was feeling better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were intrigued by that and recognising that the second major pain burden for women, outside of migraine, is endometrial burden we felt it incumbent upon us to try and explore whether this intervention approach might be useful in that context.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can show that in combination, there is a therapeutic dose effect in reducing the two biggest pain burdens in women, well, that\u2019s an extraordinary outcome, and we want to get that out to the community as quickly as we possibly can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinical trial co-ordinator Emily Redwood, who is a dietitian and a Curtin University PhD candidate, said if effective, the treatment could be more cost effective and have less side effects than current medication for the condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough my work as a dietitian, I\u2019ve seen countless patients that are living with this debilitating pain and it has really major effects to career progression, social life, mental health and wellbeing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know as well that people with endometriosis often are using painkillers or other medications daily, which have many side effects and often they may not be suitable for long term use.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this was successful, it would be fantastic to have an alternative option that is cost effective, and potentially doesn\u2019t have as many severe side effects as a lot of the options that are available at the moment for people with endo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s only emerging evidence in this space, so we need more trials like what we\u2019re doing at Curtin and Perron to really be able to give health<\/a> professionals the evidence to make recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study is currently recruiting participants for the 56-week trial, with those eligible including those with a confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis, living in Perth, and aged between 18-45.<\/p>\n

Participants also can\u2019t be currently pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy within the next 56 weeks.<\/p>\n
