HOLLYWOOD, Calif. \u2013 Gloria Cazares, whose child was killed in the Uvalde school shooting, accepted the award for Best Documentary Short at the 98th Academy Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter, Jackie, was 9 years old when she was killed in Uvalde<\/a>,\u201d Cazares said. \u201cSince that day, her bedroom has been frozen in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cAll the Empty Rooms,\u201d the short directed by Joshua Seftel and produced Conall Jones, journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as document the empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings over the course of seven years.<\/p>\n

\u201cJackie is more than just a headline,\u201d Cazares said. \u201cShe is our light and our life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cazares said that she hopes the world sees the empty bedrooms left behind by the shooting and that it will help enact change.<\/p>\n

\u201cGun violence is now the number one cause of death in kids and teens,\u201d Cazares said. \u201cWe believe that if the world could see their empty bedrooms, we\u2019d be a different America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best original song winners had many more thanks to give backstage<\/p>\n

The winners for \u201cGolden\u201d in \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d thanked additional colleagues and family members after they were cut off during their acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

Singer songwriter EJAE said she wanted to shoutout her fellow performers Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna, who voiced the singing parts along her in the film.<\/p>\n

The cast also delivered thanks to their fans watching in Korea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very nervous but it was such an honor to be performing, it\u2019s such an incredible stage,\u201d EJAE said. \u201cIt was not on my bucket list because I did not think it was possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Korean American said it was an \u201cincredible experience\u201d to honor their ancestors by beginning their performance with Korean traditional music.<\/p>\n

After the show, it\u2019s time to eat and drink<\/p>\n

First stop for Oscar winners and invited guests after the show ends is the Governors Ball. They\u2019ll ride escalators up to the Ray Dolby Ballroom atop the shopping and entertainment complex where the ceremony is held.<\/p>\n

The show typically runs three hours or more, creating a powerful need for immediate food and drink after sitting that long.<\/p>\n

Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is in his 32nd year catering the party. He\u2019s supported by 75 savory chefs and 45 pastry chefs.<\/p>\n

Winners can sip on signature cocktails like \u201cThe Sequel\u201d with tequila and \u201cAfter Glow\u201d without booze while waiting for their names to be engraved on their golden statues.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a sit-down dinner. It\u2019s the first chance for Oscar-goers to let their hair down on the night\u2019s party circuit, gossip about the show over the din of a live band and move on to the next bash. Over 300 servers swarm the crowd with food on trays and small plates. Vegans will feel at home since the party has offered over 50% plant-based and vegetarian dishes since 2013.<\/p>\n

Conan keeps things (pretty much) on schedule<\/p>\n

The runtime of the show clocked in at 3 hours and 40 minutes, which is pretty typical for the show and somewhat modest considering 24 awards were handed out Sunday evening. The longest ceremony lasted over four hours in 2002.<\/p>\n

A bizarre, pre-taped epilogue to the Oscars showed O\u2019Brien being named the Oscars\u2019 \u201cHost for Life\u201d after his performance tonight.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s before he\u2019s locked into an office where a green gas fills the room. An unconscious O\u2019Brien is carried out to show his name plaque replaced by… Mr. Beast?<\/p>\n

\u2018One Battle After Another\u2019 wins best picture<\/p>\n

The film was the big winner at this year\u2019s Oscars, leading the way with six wins.<\/p>\n

It becomes the 42nd film in Oscars history with at least six statuettes.<\/p>\n

\u201cSinners\u201d won four this year and \u201cFrankenstein\u201d won three.<\/p>\n

Jessie Buckley, \u2018Hamnet,\u2019 wins best actress<\/p>\n

Four people in Jessie Buckley\u2019s Irish family stood up and waved toward the stage from the mezzanine, far out of sight of the stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family, my Irish family, they\u2019re all here, Ireland bought them flights,\u201d Buckley said. \u201cMom, dad, thank you for teaching me to dream and to never be defined by expectation but to carve your own passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds. Thank you for recognizing me in this role,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Historic Oscar winner shouts out \u2018little girls who look like me\u2019<\/p>\n

Autumn Durald Arkapaw<\/a>, the first woman and Black person to win the cinematography award told reporters in the press room that she was worried about using her time wisely for her acceptance speech. \u201cAre they going to kick me off?\u201d she recalled wondering. Still, she managed to give a grounded, moving speech, and one she hopes will inspire future filmmakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of little girls who look like me will sleep really well tonight because they\u2019ll want to become cinematographers,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She decided to ask all the women in the Dolby Theatre to stand up during her speech because \u201cmoments like this don\u2019t happen without women kind of standing up for you and advocating for you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The win \u201cisn\u2019t about me anymore,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s about so much more and I wanted it for all of the ladies in the room, and I wanted it for all the girls at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael B. Jordan, \u2018Sinners,\u2019 wins best actor<\/p>\n

The loudest and rowdiest applause of the evening likely came from inside the press room when Michael B. Jordan was announced as the winner of the best actor prize. Reporters in the room burst into raucous cheers before presenter Adrien Brody could even finish reading out the \u201cSinners\u201d star\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

Michael B. Jordan\u2019s dad stood up and pumped his fist toward the stage. The actor said his father flew in from Ghana for the Oscars.<\/p>\n

He was one of the many, many people who gave the \u201cSinners\u201d star a rousing, standing ovation for his first Oscar win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stand here because of the people that came before me,\u201d he said, adding thanks for the support he\u2019s received throughout his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel it, I know you guys want to me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul Thomas Anderson, \u2018One Battle After Another,\u2019 wins best director<\/p>\n

Anderson dedicated his win to Adam Somner.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s in a really big bar up in the sky right now,\u201d Anderson said of his late collaborator. \u201cHe\u2019s having a gin and tonic, and he is so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson said of the trophy for best director: \u201cThere will always be some doubt in your heart that you deserve it. But there is no question the pleasure of having it for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Golden\u2019 from \u2018KPop Demon Hunters\u2019 wins best original song<\/p>\n

The vocalists behind the song, EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, performed it live for the Oscars audience earlier in the night.<\/p>\n

As the group of winners accepted the award, the music started up. EJAE, who spoke first, put her hand up and said, \u201cPlease stop.\u201d The music kept going as her fellow winners tried to speak and then the lights dimmed as they cut to commercial.<\/p>\n

Inside, two people continued to try to speak, the audience seemed a little upset and the mic was completely cut off. The play-off music was loud and definitive.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sentimental Value\u2019 wins best international feature for Norway<\/p>\n

\u201cThis film is about a very dysfunctional family and it\u2019s the opposite of what I felt with this beautiful group behind me,\u201d the filmmaker behind the feature, Joachim Trier, said.<\/p>\n

He also quoted James Baldwin: \u201cAll adults are responsible for all children,\u201d adding that people should not vote for politicians who don\u2019t take this into account.<\/p>\n

Why France submitted \u2018It Was Just an Accident\u2019 and Tunisia did \u2018The Voice of Hind Rajab\u2019 for best international feature<\/p>\n

Per Academy rules, a country may only submit one film for consideration in the international feature film category.<\/p>\n

In Iran, a government-backed committee controlled film submissions, and was unlikely to consider dissident films like \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d<\/a> by filmmaker Jafar Panahi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So France submitted the film instead. Panahi lives in France for part of the year, the cofinancing company was French, some of the producers were French, the editing was done in Paris and the film played in France.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab,\u201d<\/a> about the story of a 6-year-old<\/a> killed in Gaza, is Tunisia\u2019s entry. The director Kaouther Ben Hania is Tunisian, and Palestine submitted a different film.<\/p>\n

Audience members waved golden light sticks in the air, a common sight at Korean pop concerts, as \u201cKpop Demon Hunters\u201d singers EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami took the stage to sing \u201cGolden.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to dedicate this to my aunt, Barbara Hall, who was film archivist for the Academy for over 25 years, showing me old movies and teaching me about film history,\u201d Jurgensen said.<\/p>\n

\u2018F1\u2019 gets best sound win<\/p>\n

The prize recognized the work of Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo and Juan Peralta in the movie.<\/p>\n

Ludwig G\u00f6ransson, \u2018Sinners,\u2019 wins best score<\/p>\n

Blues changed the life of G\u00f6ransson\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad bought his first blues album in Sweden, 1964,\u201d G\u00f6ransson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though it was on the other side of the world from a place my dad had never been, and a place he could not relate to, the music was so powerful it changed my dad\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Mr. Nobody Against Putin\u2019 wins best documentary feature<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Mr Nobody Against Putin\u2019 is about how you lose your country. And what we saw when working with this footage is that you lose it through countless small, little acts of complicity,\u201d filmmaker David Borenstein said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all face a moral choice, but luckily, even a nobody is more powerful than you think,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel is back (again)<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s return to the Oscars stage (\u201cWait, am I not hosting?\u201d) and ABC telecast where he served as host four times still can\u2019t possibly be as dramatic as the year he just had.<\/p>\n

ABC and parent company Disney yanked his late-night show \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d<\/a> off the air in September for remarks he made following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n

Kimmel\u2019s indefinite suspension was celebrated by President Donald Trump<\/a>. But it wouldn\u2019t even be a week before he returned to the air<\/a> with much stronger ratings than before.<\/p>\n

His jokes at Trump\u2019s expense prompted the president to post that ABC needed to \u201cget the bum off the air.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Kimmel instead got a contract extension<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n

\u2018Avatar: Fire and Ash\u2019 gets win for best visual effects<\/p>\n

The award recognizes the work of Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett.<\/p>\n

\u2018Frankenstein,\u2019 picks up another win<\/p>\n

Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau won best production design for the film.<\/p>\n

\u2018An intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail\u2019<\/p>\n

Barbra Streisand\u2019s tribute to Robert Redford highlighted the late actor-director\u2019s history of defending press freedoms, protecting the environment and encouraging new voices in film.<\/p>\n

\u201cBob had real backbone on and off the screen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Babs, as Redford used to call her, sang \u201cThe Way We Were\u201d at the end of her tribute.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss him now more than ever, even though he loved teasing me,\u201d she said, explaining how she got the nickname.<\/p>\n

Rachel McAdams paid tribute to women \u2014 and Diane Keaton, in particular<\/p>\n

\u201cBelieve me when I say there is an actress of my generation who was not inspired by and enthralled with her absolute singularity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

McAdams told the audience a Girl Scout song Keaton used to sing set on film sets:<\/p>\n

\u201cMake new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That\u2019s how long, I will be your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reiner\u2019s actors join Billy Crystal onstage in tribute<\/p>\n

Billy Crystal opened the in memoriam segment honoring his best friend, Rob Reiner.<\/p>\n

He ticked off a list of Reiner\u2019s films, including \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally,\u201d starring Crystal and Meg Ryan, \u201cStand By Me,\u201d \u201cSay Anything\u201d and \u201cThis is Spinal Tap,\u201d among many others.<\/p>\n

A photo of Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner, appeared behind Crystal.<\/p>\n

The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home in December. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged in the deaths of his parents and has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

Having a slew of actors with longstanding ties to Reiner \u2014 Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland, Fred Savage, Demi Moore, John Cusack, Ione Skye and many others \u2014 come on stage for the tribute was reminiscent of how the Academy did the same for director John Hughes at the Oscars 16 years ago.<\/p>\n

Ryan Coogler, \u2018Sinners,\u2019 wins best original screenplay<\/p>\n

For his first original film, not adapted from any source material, Coogler won the original screenplay Oscar \u2014 his very first. He\u2019s also up for more awards tonight.<\/p>\n

Before accepting his award for original screenplay, Coogler embraced his wife, Zinzi Coogler, who is a producer and worked with him on \u201cSinners.\u201d He then went down the line with his cast, hugging Jack O\u2019Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo and, lastly, his frequent collaborator and friend, Michael B. Jordan.<\/p>\n

During his speech, he asked the \u201cSinners\u201d cast and crew to stand up. \u201cYou\u2019re all winners in my book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Paul Thomas Anderson, \u2018One Battle After Another,\u2019 wins best adapted screenplay<\/p>\n

In adapting Thomas Pynchon\u2019s 1990 novel about a subculture of aging rebels, \u201cVineland,\u201d Anderson reworked everything from the timeline to the characters\u2019 names to more details than can be listed in brief. <\/p>\n

But he does capture the humor, the cynicism and the sweep of Pynchon, the sense of a ragged community of outsiders caught up by forces far beyond even its own paranoid assumptions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote this movie for my kids to say sorry for the housekeeping mess that we left in this world we\u2019re handing off to them,\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n

Sean Penn, best supporting actor winner, has skipped the Oscars, again<\/p>\n

He won as supporting actor for \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSean Penn couldn\u2019t be here this evening,\u201d presenter Kieran Culkin said. \u201cOr didn\u2019t want to, so I\u2019ll be accepting the award on his behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n

Penn did little campaigning this awards season, and also stayed away from the Actor Awards and BAFTA Awards, where he won trophies.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Penn has no-showed at the Oscars.<\/p>\n

The 65-year-old actor has never appeared too attached to Hollywood hardware, whether he wins or loses. He previously gave one of his Oscars to Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

An Oscars tie is rare, but not a first<\/p>\n

The live action short category resulted in a tie (\u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva\u201d and \u201cThe Singers\u201d each got statuettes) this year. But this is not the first time this has happened at the Oscars.<\/p>\n

The most recent tie came during the 2013 Oscars honoring films from 2012, when \u201cZero Dark Thirty\u201d and \u201cSkyfall\u201d tied for the sound editing category. There have been five other ties in Oscars history, making Sunday\u2019s tie the seventh.<\/p>\n

The first tie, which was at the 5th Academy Awards almost 100 years ago, was based on an old rule. Wallace Beery (\u201cThe Champ\u201d) and Fredric March (\u201cDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\u201d) tied for best actor. They came within exactly one vote of each other, and in accordance with Academy rules at the time, they shared the recognition. That rule has since changed and only an exact match in totals would qualify as a tie today, according to the Academy.<\/p>\n

2 live action shorts tie for the win in that category<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you to the Academy for supporting a movie that is weird, that is queer, and made by a majority of women!\u201d said Natalie Musteata of \u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director Sam A. Davis of \u201cSingers\u201d called his short a \u201csimple story about the power of music and art to bring us together in a moment when we live in an increasingly isolated world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cassandra Kulukundis, \u2018One Battle After Another,\u2019 win inaugural Oscar for best casting<\/p>\n

Kulukundis thanked the academy for making this award happen: \u201cI dedicate this to you and to the casting directors who never got a chance to get up here, who didn\u2019t even get a chance to get their name on the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kulukundis has served as the casting director on past Oscar favorites including \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d and \u201cThere Will Be Blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has worked on all 10 of \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d director Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s<\/a> feature films, beginning as an intern<\/a> on his debut film \u201cHard Eight\u201d in 1996.<\/p>\n

Conan teases the smartphone generation<\/p>\n

Host Conan O\u2019Brien aimed his comedic barbs towards screenagers and the generally phone-obsessed in a short pre-taped segment about a (surely fictional) film lab that reimagines classic films to be optimal for smart phone viewing.<\/p>\n

So-called \u201cadvanced\u201d technology isolates the most visually interesting part of the shot for the vertical-only version, but that is often not the most interesting or dynamic part of the shot. An example was the infamous orgasm scene from the late Rob Reiner\u2019s \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally,\u201d where the vertical-only shot does not show an animated Meg Ryan, but rather a woman in the background who is taking a sip from a glass.<\/p>\n

\u2018Frankenstein\u2019 gets wins for best costume design and best hair and makeup<\/p>\n

Only five awards into the night, \u201cFrankenstein\u201d is a two-time winner already after taking home the Oscar for costume design, as well as hair and makeup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we\u2019re making this film, we had the sense we\u2019re part of something very special, and tonight confirms that,\u201d makeup artist Mike Hill said. Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey were the other artists on the award-winning team.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of myself and the amazing team that I work with, the artisans, the alchemists, dream weavers, we\u2019re so grateful to the Academy for recognizing our craft,\u201d said Kate Hawley, the film\u2019s costume designer.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sinners\u2019 starts off strong \u2013 and on stage<\/p>\n

Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq are performing \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d the nominated original song from \u201cSinners.\u201d They\u2019re joined by a bevy of performers onstage \u2014 Misty Copeland,<\/a> Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone \u201cKingfish\u201d Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey<\/a> and Alice Smith among them \u2014 for a near-recreation of the scene in \u201cSinners\u201d where the song is introduced.<\/p>\n

It is one of the more memorable moments in the film, where a blues song in a Mississippi juke joint opens up to showcase hip-hop DJs, rock \u2018n\u2019 roll guitarists, ballerinas and more, illustrating the Black music genre\u2019s place at the foundation of American popular culture.<\/p>\n

When the live tribute performance to \u201cSinners\u201d wrapped on stage, there was a slew of applause, some of which came from people who stood for the ovation.<\/p>\n

The highest praise may have come from Michael B. Jordan himself, who nodded and smiled.<\/p>\n

The message was clear: The star approved, big time.<\/p>\n

The Girl Who Cried Pearls\u2019 wins best animated short<\/p>\n

The Canadian film is about a poor boy who falls in love with a girl who cries those gemstones, and he decides to pawn them for money. Directed by Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, the boy ends up making a choice between pearls and love. It takes place in Montreal.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Canada,\u201d Lavis and Szczerbowski said while accepting their award.<\/p>\n

\u2018KPop Demon Hunters\u2019 wins best animated feature<\/p>\n

Three years ago, Arden Cho was ready to walk away from acting. She\u2019d landed her first lead role in the Netflix series \u201cPartner Track,\u201d<\/a> only to see it canceled after one season. She was heartbroken.<\/p>\n

Her agent wouldn\u2019t let her go. \u201cShe refused to say, \u2018You\u2019re done.\u2019 She just kept sending me things,\u201d Cho said. \u201cShe just keep being like, \u2018Look, I know you\u2019re not auditioning. I know you\u2019re done, but I think you\u2019d like this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Cho is juggling multiple projects after voicing the lead character Rumi in Netflix\u2019s animated summertime sensation \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d which has become the all-time most-streamed movie on the platform<\/a> \u2014 and spawned inescapable earworms \u201cGolden\u201d and \u201cSoda Pop\u201d as its soundtrack dominated pop charts.<\/p>\n

And now it\u2019s an Oscar winner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is for Korea and Koreans everywhere,\u201d said \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d co-director Maggie Kang.<\/p>\n

Amy Madigan wins best supporting actress<\/p>\n

Madigan, following a deep cackle, said she thought of her speech in the shower the day before.<\/p>\n

Madigan won \u2014 and Taylor seemed to be the first to leap from her seat in celebration when she was announced.<\/p>\n

Conan\u2019s off and running with the jokes<\/p>\n

Conan O\u2019Brien<\/a> is off and running at the Oscars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Conan O\u2019Brien and I\u2019m honored to be the last human host of the Academy Awards,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cYes! Yeah! Next year it\u2019s going to be a Waymo in a tux.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the jokes kept coming.<\/p>\n

Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s opening skit: He complains about wearing too much makeup as Aunt Gladys from \u201cWeapons,\u201d says he looks like \u201cBette Davis with lupus\u201d and it\u2019s all done to the soundtrack of \u201cSabotage\u201d from the Beastie Boys, all as he runs through various scenes of this year\u2019s nominated films.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t believe I learned Norwegian for this,\u201d he says, via subtitles, at one point. He then got chased onto the stage by a horde of children.<\/p>\n

The irreverent tone for the opening is now set.<\/p>\n
