{"id":543972,"date":"2026-03-16T11:46:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T11:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/543972\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T11:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T11:46:13","slug":"new-10-year-plan-for-perth-city-unveiled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/543972\/","title":{"rendered":"New 10-year plan for Perth city unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Perth has endorsed a new plan, developed in collaboration with urban strategy firm Gehl, for the city\u2019s next decade, which is projected to reach 55,000 residents by 2036 and up to 90,000 by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The vision, titled \u201cShaping Perth City Centre: Towards 2036 and Beyond,\u201d marks a 30-year collaboration between the City of Perth and Gehl, the practice of Danish architect and urban designer Jan Gehl. It builds on Gehl\u2019s previous studies for Perth, which shaped projects including <a href=\"https:\/\/architectureau.com\/Elizabeth%20Quay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Elizabeth Quay<\/a>, the Perth City Link and the recently opened <a href=\"https:\/\/architectureau.com\/articles\/construction-begins-on-ecu-city-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Edith Cowan University (ECU) City campus<\/a>. The framework was also developed in response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/architectureau.com\/articles\/report-card-evaluates-perths-progress-on-plan-for-2036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2025 evaluation<\/a>, and received input from the local community, industry professionals, state government agencies and City of Perth staff.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Under the new plan, William Street will be transformed into a green spine within the CBD. Our city centre must continue to evolve to support that growth and unlock its full potential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to a communique from the City of Perth, the vision is comprised of five key goals, supported by 20 actionable directions, alongside \u201cfive major projects designed to attract visitors and residents, improve public spaces and better connect the city centre with Kings Park and the Swan River.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A new \u201cPeople\u2019s Walk\u201d is planned to connect Central Perth Station. Pictured: collage view.\" class=\"['full'] full blur-up lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/21c45086b56404f2ade4158f1c90f70b.jpg\" height=\"363\" width=\"728\"\/><\/p>\n<p>View gallery<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds commented that the plan \u201cprioritis[es] high-quality public spaces, greater housing choice, thriving local businesses and rich cultural experiences that encourage people to explore the city and stay longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The five projects presented in the vision include:<\/p>\n<p>Development of the north\u2013south connecting city corridors, including transformation of William Street into a green spine and Barrack Street into a cultural spine, as well as a new \u201cPeople\u2019s Walk\u201d connecting Central Perth Station, Forrest Place, Carillon City and Elizabeth Quay<br \/>\nCreation of a connected waterfront route, named Buneenboro Loop, linking Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan), Kings Park (Kaarta Gar-up), Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Elizabeth Quay and Langley Park<br \/>\nSupporting new residential neighbourhoods across the city centre, with a focus on King, Pier, Irwin and Queen streets<br \/>\nRepositioning Hay and Murray Street Malls as a vibrant, mixed-use destination<br \/>\nRenewal of St Georges Terrace and Wellington Street as people-first, east\u2013west transit corridors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The renewal of Wellington Street as a people-first corridor with mid-tier public transport is one of the five major projects planned.
