Beer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alcohol is strictly, under the same way as brevetoxin is a toxin, alcohol is a toxin, and we don&#8217;t run around the country saying we&#8217;ve got a toxic beer crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tuesday will mark one year since <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-17\/waitpinga-beach-foam-investigation\/105060888\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105060888\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC News first reported the emergence of a mystery foam at a beach<\/a> south of Adelaide which made surfers unwell and caused dead fish to wash ashore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the weeks and months that followed, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-08\/size-of-sa-algal-bloom-revealed\/105264168\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105264168\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the bloom spread along the South Australian coastline<\/a> including to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-28\/algal-bloom-hits-adelaide-beaches\/105472730\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105472730\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metropolitan Adelaide<\/a>, where countless dead sea creatures \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-05\/shark-washes-up-amid-marine-death-concerns-sa\/105254780\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105254780\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including a great white shark<\/a> \u2014 washed ashore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In May, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-08\/millions-oysters-quarantined-sa-algal-bloom\/105266062\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105266062\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brevetoxins were found in oyster farms at Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula<\/a>, and testing of the great white shark that washed up on Henley Beach commenced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A shark lies on its side on a sandy beach.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773669617_29_9b8429cb97e42a6c980ccd59f0a48058.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A dead shark on Henley Beach in Adelaide during the state&#8217;s algal bloom disaster. (Supplied: Rebecca Morse)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, a spokesperson for PIRSA said it was investigating the death of the male shark &#8220;with samples collected for further analysis&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The cause of death is still under investigation and any links to this incident and other recent shark mortalities at other locations on the South Australian coast are unable to be determined at this stage,&#8221; a PIRSA spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four Corners revealed an email sent by a pathologist \u2014 obtained under Freedom of Information \u2014 sounded the alarm on the results of the dead shark, which was found to have brevetoxins on its gills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is an uncommon and significant finding,&#8221; the pathologist wrote on May 16 at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite the finding, SA Health did not update its health advice with the premier saying the bloom &#8220;doesn&#8217;t present a risk to people&#8217;s safety&#8221; in a press conference the next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Algal bloom foam on rocks\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e1a8c6d0c218f3570dec5a65ab1b629c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Algal bloom foam at Brighton beach in Adelaide last October.\u00a0 (ABC Radio Adelaide: Bobby Macumber)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Four Corners also revealed SA Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier asked UTS scientist Shauna Murray, who first helped identify the bloom, and her colleagues remove references to &#8220;severe \u2026 human health effects&#8221; from a research paper they were working on about the algal bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Spurrier defended her request and told the program the scientists&#8217; paper didn&#8217;t reflect the evidence she was seeing from hospitals and GPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, ABC News spoke to people facing what they believed were health impacts from the bloom including a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-27\/sa-algal-bloom-affects-health-victor-harbor-residents\/105697370\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105697370\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teenager with a persistent cough and a pharmacist who reported customers experiencing breathing difficulties and itchy eyes<\/a> after walking on the beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Calls to release all information and be &#8216;transparent&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both the opposition and The Greens are calling for more transparency on when decisions were made to change public health information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn said the premier had not been &#8220;up front&#8221; with the wider public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be transparent,&#8221; Ms Hurn told ABC Radio Adelaide in response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You [Peter Malinauskas] avoided using the word toxic at every turn that you could, despite the fact that there were multiple experts from right around the world that were calling it so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And this does speak to, I think, something that&#8217;s pretty core at the way in which the premier runs the state, and that is that he is so obsessed with PR and politics that \u2026 he&#8217;s lost sight of what&#8217;s important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man and a woman in suits laughing while at a table with folders\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1acf121e4c1a85b3ff08507a0ecfe383.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn advised former premier Steven Marshall on media and communication before the 2022 election. (Facebook: Ashton Hurn MP)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said during her time working with former premier Steven Marshall during the COVID pandemic she was &#8220;pretty close with how things worked during COVID and making sure that communication was front and centre&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be able to give people as much info as you possibly can \u2014 you don&#8217;t need to spin it,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Greens SA leader Robert Simms said the premier &#8220;has got some explaining to do&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The South Australian community should be able to see that full chain of advice that was provided to cabinet and then they can make up their own minds,&#8221; Mr Simms said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are in the middle of a significant environmental catastrophe.
