BRING BACK 25M PENALTIES? GREATS DISCUSS COSTLY PIES PENALTY<\/p>\n
An AFL great has questioned whether the 25m penalty should be brought back after Collingwood\u2019s costly double 50m penalty in the fourth quarter of Saturday night\u2019s loss to Adelaide.<\/p>\n
The Magpies gave up two 50m penalties for players not standing on the mark in the final 10 minutes of the game, which led to Crows goals.<\/p>\n
The first infringement was through the crackdown of the rule, with multiple Collingwood players retrieving off the mark, instead of at least one of them standing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey all happened to be defenders. What you\u2019d love to see is maybe one\u2019s a ruckman, one\u2019s a forward and one\u2019s a winger or mid \u2014 he\u2019s the one who stands so the defenders can get back,\u201d Brownlow medallist Nathan Buckley told Fox Footy\u2019s On the Couch.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut all three of the defenders thought I\u2019ve got to get back!\u201d<\/p>\n

Geelong champion Tom Hawkins sympathised with players in such high pressure scenarios and posed whether the 50m penalty was too harsh a punishment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bit I grapple with the most is at times you\u2019re watching football, whether live or on the couch, there\u2019s so much pressure in the game for players to be thinking about what they\u2019re doing, where they need to run and how they need to defend. Let alone to listen and hear the umpire,\u201d Hawkins said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a big penalty, 50 metres, at certain points of the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a big loophole in our game, whether we need to bring it back to 25 or not. It\u2019s just such a big punishment, so much ground to be conceded for something that is not necessarily within your control sometimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen there\u2019s three in the area, if you\u2019re all defenders and working back, that communication level is really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hawks legend Jordan Lewis thought the crackdown of the stand on the mark rule would have the \u201copposite\u201d effect to start the season and multiple players \u201coveremphasise\u201d needing to stand.<\/p>\n
Buckley was overall fan of the new rules and how it\u2019s opened the game up and tested defences, calling for the AFL to \u201cdouble down\u201d on it. <\/p>\n
\u201cMake sure you are as strong as you are now throughout the season. It\u2019s a new layer in the game that challenges the defence, I like the fact it opens the game up. It\u2019s bloody hard to defend at times when you need to have that player stand, especially in your backhalf,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s something the players will come along with. There will be an error here and there, but hopefully it\u2019s largely on the players side \u2014 not the umpires side.\u201d <\/p>\n

BUCKS OPENS UP ON SCOTT SPRAY<\/p>\n
Nathan Buckley has shed light on Chris Scott\u2019s tense quarter-time spray that sparked Geelong\u2019s comeback win over Fremantle. <\/p>\n
An animated Scott fired up at his fellow coaches \u2014 including new Cats assistant Buckley \u2014 then players after his team had conceded a whopping 52 points to trail Fremantle by 33 points at quarter-time of Saturday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n
It triggered the desired response as Geelong banged on five goals in the second term to cut into its deficit, before storming home in the second half. <\/p>\n

But Buckley suggested it was one of the more measured sprays he\u2019s seen over his footy journey. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was really keen to change up the structure and how he wanted to set the ground up. We\u2019d had a chat about it the last couple of minutes of the first quarter, but then came together at quarter time before he went to the players,\u201d Buckley said on On the Couch.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was front and centre for the conversation with the players. If that\u2019s Scotty at his peak, I\u2019d put him at about a four or five out of 10 with the peak of what I\u2019ve seen other coaches go at.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that speaks to the respect and assuming good intent with the players. And giving them the license to be the masters of their domain.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso treating them like adults in terms of the challenge he put to them at that break. They clearly responded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve only been there for five minutes, so to see that in action without really needing to get too emotive was a really strong positive.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018GENUINE\u2019 CHANCE FORWARD KICKS 100 GOALS<\/p>\n
Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon believes there\u2019s a \u201cgenuine\u201d chance a forward eclipses 100 goals this season in a \u201cshift\u201d to the way the game\u2019s being played.<\/p>\n
And he thinks a Hawthorn stalwart could be likeliest to do so.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe balance of power; I think it\u2019s shifted,\u201d Lyon said on Fox Footy\u2019s AFL 360 on Monday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe bemoaned the fact that the forwards were just giving up all the advantage (in years past), and just became reactive to defenders \u2026 I know it\u2019s only a game and a half, but winds of changes have come through.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it\u2019s favouring these blokes that will come up and hit at the footy. Jack Gunston kicked five goals (against Essendon), 23 marks inside forward 50 for Hawthorn \u2026 this suits him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe defenders don\u2019t get it their own way anymore, they haven\u2019t got the drop-off player to give them a hand anymore – they\u2019ve got to defend one-on-one, and frankly, I think they\u2019ve forgotten how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with Gunston, the Bulldogs\u2019 Aaron Naughton (six goals), Geelong\u2019s Shannon Neale (five), Melbourne\u2019s Jacob van Rooyen (six) and Gold Coast\u2019s Ben King (five) all cashed in at the weekend.<\/p>\n
Ball movement – the rate at which teams transition the footy from defensive 50 to forward 50 – is thus far up on last season, as are marks on the lead, while intercept marks have decreased.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe forwards are flexing their muscles \u2026 (Jacob) van Rooyen hasn\u2019t seen ball movement like this for five years and all of a sudden he\u2019s kicked six goals,\u201d Lyon said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBen King has kicked five and the list goes on \u2026 there is change happening and defenders have had it their own way.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a long time defenders have dictated to forwards \u2026 but the way the game is played 100 goals in a season is on and my man Jack Gunston is the one I\u2019m looking at.<\/p>\n
