(ABC News: Christopher Gillette)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When asked about concerns costs would blow out, Housing and Public Works Minister Sam O&#8217;Connor said the government had been &#8220;absolutely clear&#8221; about the funding envelope for Games infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Asked about the cost discrepancy, Treasurer David Janetzki had the same response:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been clear that projects are to be delivered on time and on budget, and the deputy premier has been very clear about that,&#8221; he told reporters in Townsville.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got the $7.1 billion funding envelope for the Games. We&#8217;ve returned productivity to Queensland work sites.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The treasurer acknowledged the &#8220;war for talent&#8221;, saying Queensland was determined to get the &#8220;skills and training right&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are seeing the green shoots,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sector &#8216;cautiously optimistic&#8217; despite challenges<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The difficulty of filling roles was laid bare in the QSC report. It stated there were more than 5,600 vacancies for construction jobs in the state in November last year \u2014 up 40 per cent on the same period five years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Without a stronger pipeline of workers entering the industry, the risk of project delays and rising delivery costs will increase, placing further pressure on an already stretched construction sector,&#8221; the report warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite the challenges, Master Builders Queensland chief executive Paul Bidwell characterised the sector as &#8220;cautiously optimistic&#8221; about its capacity to deliver on all of the projects in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, &#8220;it begs the question about whether something has to give and \u2026 we really won&#8217;t know what that looks like until we almost get there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He agreed the cost of construction was likely to increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the report, the cost of projects in the construction pipelines averages out to $69 billion per year over the coming years, with an anticipated peak of $75 billion in 2027-28.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a man with square glasses and short grey hair speaks in front of a building sign\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ebdf479553128aa16f7dc98745a0bd52.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Paul Bidwell says reports which identify the scale of the workforce problem are needed.
