(ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p>Aquaculture support drops<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The new report, entitled &#8216;Troubled waters or shared futures?&#8217; details the results of a questionnaire sent around the state in April 2025 to more than 900 Tasmanians with an interest in the marine environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The groups surveyed included aquaculture workers, marine scientists, government employees, commercial fishers, marine tourism operators, environmental and Aboriginal advocacy groups and recreational water users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the survey, more than 90 per cent of respondents said Tasmania&#8217;s waterways were central to their way of life, and 70 per cent were &#8220;worried or angry&#8221; about its health.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A drone shot of salmon pens in the water.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3bab2e72ce10ce2b20e07d5144c4f783.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Advocacy groups, water enthusiasts, and tourism operators identified salmon aquaculture as their highest concern in the report. (ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p>Rebuilding social licence a &#8216;long-term commitment&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report&#8217;s authors said the survey showed debate was about the industry&#8217;s demonstrated environmental credibility, perceptions of good governance, and genuine communication and engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Scott Condie said he did not think there was a point where the economic benefits of the industry would be so valuable that respondents would ignore the other attributes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is a story that goes back to 2015 \u2026 where we&#8217;ve had multiple events driving up levels of concern,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a long-term trend here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said that prior to 2015, the salmon industry was viewed positively within Tasmania and received positive media coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People were actually enthusiastic about it,&#8221;  Dr Scott Condie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was a relatively new, growing industry, providing lots of employment \u2026 and the scale of it was smaller at that stage, so the impacts were significantly less.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report&#8217;s authors said between 1986 and 2015 the industry held an &#8220;enviable&#8221; social license to operate, but it had become increasingly contested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Rebuilding social license will require a long-term commitment from industry and government to transparency, environmental credibility, and meaningful engagement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sentiment not tied to individual controversies<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bag of veterinary medicine product.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/d6cb9b79ca983b2b3ad440d7e46bfb27.png\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The federal veterinary medicine regulator suspended the Tasmanian salmon industry&#8217;s emergency licence to use the antibiotic florfenicol to treat a bacterial disease. (Abbey Laboratories)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The researchers said they had conducted their surveys during periods of relative stability in the industry to try and avoid biased results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They said they had delayed their 2021 survey until six months after the publication of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-04-29\/epa-wes-ford-emails-to-tassal-revealed-over-salmon-deaths\/100103164\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100103164\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Flanagan&#8217;s book &#8216;Toxic&#8217;, which heavily criticised the industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Corrine Condie said she would not run a similar survey now, as she believed the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-27\/tas-concerns-over-salmon-antibiotic-approval-process\/106391438\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106391438\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debate around the industry&#8217;s use of the antibiotic florfenicol in the state&#8217;s south-east<\/a> had skewed long-term perceptions of the sector.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-17\/tasmania-rock-lobster-fishery-antibiotic-florfenicol-salmon\/106016448\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Salmon antibiotic leads to partial rock lobster fishery closure<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Tasmanian government closed two zones within the state&#8217;s rock lobster fishery just hours after the commercial season opened. The closure is in response to concerns about an antibiotic being used by salmon companies and the rock lobster industry&#8217;s reputation in overseas markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last November, an emergency licence to use the antibiotic in salmon was granted to help deal with the bacterial disease piscirickettsiosis, which caused <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-07\/salmon-tasmania-apologises-for-mortality-event\/105024028\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105024028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass mortalities in salmon<\/a> the previous summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The licence was suspended after traces of the antibiotic were found in wild fish, including abalone and rock lobster, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-19\/salmon-farm-antibiotics-found-in-native-species\/106363462\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106363462\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 10 kilometres away<\/a> from the closest fish pens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That followed disease outbreaks that led to mass-mortality events in salmon pens last summer, and changes to environmental laws prior to the May 2025 election to allow salmon farming to continue in Macquarie Harbour in Tasmania&#8217;s west.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Excellent practices, best science&#8217;, industry says<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Salmon Tasmania chief executive John Whittington said Tasmanian salmon growers take their responsibilities to their stakeholders and communities extremely seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know how many people support what we do, and we know how important our product is to them and their livelihoods,&#8221;  Dr Whittington said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Tasmanian salmon growers are governed by some of the strictest regulations anywhere in the world, and we work with our regulators to ensure that what we do is backed by excellent practices and the very best science.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"John Whittington in a suit and glasses stands on Battery Point foreshore with a group of workers in caps and hi-vis jackets.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4d3d3113c2a6be8fb927a3141efa10c5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr John Whittington says the antibiotic has been effective at treating piscirickettsiosis.
