{"id":547323,"date":"2026-03-18T01:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T01:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/547323\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T01:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T01:04:09","slug":"senegals-afcon-final-win-overturned-as-morocco-declared-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/547323\/","title":{"rendered":"Senegal&#8217;s AFCON final win overturned as Morocco declared winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a6945df8-27b1-9615-af13-7379154954b9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=2869\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morocco<\/a> was stunningly awarded the <a data-league-guid=\"bb156ba1-46ad-7892-2b1c-afb73035e08f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/league\/_\/name\/CAF.NATIONS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Africa Cup of Nations<\/a> title Tuesday by appeals judges who overturned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=654\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senegal<\/a>&#8216;s victory in a chaotic final in January.<\/p>\n<p>The Confederation of African Football said its appeal board ruled Senegal was &#8220;declared to have forfeited the Final&#8221; and its 1-0 win in extra time becomes a 3-0 default win for host nation Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/47693305\/senegal-coach-defends-team-afcon-final-walkoff-chaos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senegal coach defends AFCON final walkoff<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/47660852\/morocco-appeal-fifa-caf-afcon-chaos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA chief Infantino: AFCON chaos unacceptable<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Jan. 18 final in Rabat, Senegal players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, left the field in protest during stoppage time for 15 minutes &#8212; and fans tried to storm the field &#8212; when Morocco was awarded a penalty that was set to decide the match.<\/p>\n<p>When play resumed, Morocco forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/246532\/brahim-diaz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brahim D\u00edaz<\/a>&#8216;s spot kick &#8212; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/47670069\/psg-boss-sergio-ramos-defend-brahim-diaz-afcon-penalty-not-bad-person\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial slow chip<\/a> shot known as a &#8220;Panenka&#8221; &#8212; was saved by goalkeeper <a data-player-guid=\"509a7614-0ec5-99ed-9d1f-e9eff47cfdc6\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/238362\/edouard-mendy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c9douard Mendy<\/a> and Senegal scored the only goal in extra time.<\/p>\n<p>Tension in the stadium was already raised by Senegal being denied a goal minutes before the penalty was given to Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>In the second minute of stoppage time, Senegal&#8217;s apparent go-ahead goal was ruled out for a foul by <a data-player-guid=\"b507c77e-5d90-471d-bc80-72fa2b93d823\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/251614\/abdoulaye-seck\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abdoulaye Seck<\/a>, but TV replays showed little contact on Morocco defender <a data-player-guid=\"5c8662cd-474c-892f-369c-15544105fe99\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/240233\/achraf-hakimi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Achraf Hakimi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At an initial disciplinary hearing, CAF imposed fines of more than $1 million and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/espn\/story\/_\/id\/47763365\/caf-suspends-pape-thiaw-achraf-hakimi-ismael-saibari-afcon-final-fallout\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bans for Senegal and Morocco players<\/a> and officials but left the result unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Senegal players were angry for being called for a late penalty after a VAR check during the Africa Cup Of Nations final against Morocco on Jan. 18.\u00a0Torbjorn Tande\/DeFodi Images\/DeFodi via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Senegal defender <a data-player-guid=\"6263930f-3446-f67a-57a8-049fe10f3be2\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/213181\/moussa-niakhate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moussa Niakhat\u00e9<\/a> posted an image on his private Instagram account of himself holding the trophy with a message in French that said: &#8220;Come and get it! They&#8217;re crazy!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a similar post on his Instagram story, left back <a data-player-guid=\"aa54dbdc-fd0f-313d-adec-ea292790cb30\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/359796\/el-hadji-malick-diouf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">El Hadji Malick Diouf<\/a> added: &#8220;It&#8217;s not what I expected &#8230; this thing isn&#8217;t going anywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) said &#8220;its approach has never been intended to challenge the sporting performance of the teams participating in this competition, but solely to request the application of the competition&#8217;s regulations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Federation reaffirms its commitment to respecting the rules, ensuring clarity in the competitive framework, and maintaining stability within African competitions,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also wishes to commend all the nations that took part in this edition of the AFCON, which has been a major moment for African football.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The case could go to a further appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) based in Lausanne, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>CAF cited article 82 of tournament regulations for its marquee event to justify the verdict enforced on appeal, though not at the first hearing.<\/p>\n<p>It states &#8220;if, for any reason whatsoever, a team withdraws from the competition or does not report for a match, or refuses to play or leaves the ground before the regular end of the match without the authorization of the referee, it shall be considered loser and shall be eliminated for good from the current competition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The verdict Tuesday awarded Morocco its first African title since 1976 and denied Senegal its second title, and second within three editions after also lifting the trophy in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Any appeal by Senegal to CAS, would typically take about a year to reach a verdict &#8212; long after both teams play at the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Senegal has been drawn to play in a group with <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"81be996c-0f98-eec4-6284-c6be0d186360\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=478\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team\/_\/id\/464\/norway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norway<\/a> and a playoff bracket winner this month, which could be <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"5f3b0c03-6ad3-06e2-2834-9d3cafc451a8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=4375\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq<\/a>.
