(ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tap-and-go payments allow commuters to use credit cards or phone payments instead of tickets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A trial of the technology <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-14\/ticketless-travel-trial-set-to-start-in-victoria\/106451108\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106451108\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">began on four lines this week<\/a> and is only available for full fares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under the Conduent contract, the state wants concession fares to be available for tap-and-go travel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Concession holders make up a third of all passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This is a complex process and is not due to be rolled out until 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But work on the project has been paused while new government policies, such as free travel for teenagers, are considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Greaves&#8217; report found the total project cost would be $2.8 billion over 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Schedule for delivery declared &#8216;unrealistic&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The project&#8217;s budget has already blown out by $136 million and the deadline delayed by 18 months over disputes between Conduent and the transport department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">These could have been avoided, Mr Greaves&#8217;s report said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A blue poster saying &quot;More ways to tap and go&quot; and other information is tied to a fence beside silver machines with red Xs.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8de8be698ad344a2ef5058d9b0489fbe.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There&#8217;s been a $136 million budget blowout for the delayed roll out myki credit card and phone payments.
