But a new study from a team of European researchers suggests some life could be hiding in the dark on a completely different type of planet. Specifically, on the moons of rogue planets that don\u2019t even orbit a star.<\/p>\n<p>These wandering planets often take their moons with them on an endless voyage into the abyss. While these moons lack a sun to warm them, they have something else: a gravitational \u201chug\u201d from their parent planet that is so tight it generates heat from the inside out.<\/p>\n<p>Life Doesn\u2019t Need a Star<\/p>\n<p>The traditional <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3912\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/pieces\/the-exoplanet-hunters-toolkit-the-science-of-searching-for-other-worlds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Habitable Zone<\/a> (sometimes called the Goldilocks zone) is kind of like a campfire. If you sit too close, you burn, but sit too far and you freeze. You need the right distance for <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3915\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/exoplanet-researcher-awarded-for-groundbreaking-work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">liquid water<\/a>, which is necessary for life as we know it.<\/p>\n<p>But rogue planets are as far from that as you can imagine. While we\u2019re thinking about the optimal distance from the campfire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/lonely-rogue-planet-discovered-wandering-the-milky-way\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rogue planets are wandering<\/a> the cold dark forest by themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/james-webb-rogue-planet-chaotic-weather\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogue planets<\/a> are planets that were ejected from their solar systems. This typically happens early in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/baby-solar-system-nearby\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3909\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar systems\u2019 evolution<\/a>, when young planets that get too close to the star can fling each other out of orbits. The result is a free-floating planet that wanders through the galaxy without a parent star. But sometimes, these planets keep their moons along with them. These moons are where life could be.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/space-astronomy\/solar-system\/moon\/moon-interior-samples-seismometers-rep\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3913\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a moon<\/a> orbits a massive planet, especially on an elongated orbit, the planet\u2019s gravity pulls harder on one side of the moon than the other. This constant stretching creates friction in the moon\u2019s core. We see it in our solar system as well; it\u2019s why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/space-astronomy\/solar-system\/planets\/why-does-jupiter-have-so-many-darn-moons\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3907\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter\u2019s moon<\/a> Io is the most volcanic place in our solar system and why moons like Europa or Ganymede have liquid water despite being so far from the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>However, heat alone isn\u2019t enough. <\/p>\n<p>How To Build Life<\/p>\n<p>Gravity can generate enough heat to keep water liquid, even in this unlikely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/a-rogue-planet-is-devouring-six-billion-tons-of-gas-every-second\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rogue planet scenario<\/a>. But it\u2019s not enough to ask whether water might stay liquid. The question is whether these worlds might support chemistry relevant to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/peptide-formation-cosmic-dust-264334\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3908\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">origin of life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d7<\/p>\n<p>                        Thank you! One more thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Please check your inbox and confirm your subscription.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers suggest that these dark moons might actually be better than Earth-like planets at starting the engine of life.<\/p>\n<p>Biologists believe that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/comet-alcohol-261020105\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3910\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emergence of life<\/a> requires very specific conditions. Specifically, it needs several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-19184-z\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wet-dry cycles<\/a>. In other words, you need several stages of dehydration (drying) and rehydration (wetting) to concentrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/tightest-molecular-knot-lead-better-stronger-materials\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3911\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">molecular building blocks<\/a>. These cycles, which can happen in volcanic pools that evaporate and refill this rain, can concentrate molecules and link them together into long chains like RNA.<\/p>\n<p>On a sunless exomoon, the tides would be massive. As the moon moves through its orbit, the changing gravitational pull could cause the oceans to heave and recede, creating perfect wet-dry zones on any available land.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers, led by David Dahlb\u00fcdding and Tommaso Grassi from the Max Plank Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, also modelled the atmospheres of such planets. They found that these hydrogen worlds would likely be rich in ammonia, which makes water less acidic. This is exactly what you need to help RNA strands grow and stay stable.<\/p>\n<p>A Numbers Game<\/p>\n<p>The problem with these studies is that they show what could be possible. But you still need some conditions to be just right. In that sense, whether life really can exist on such planets becomes a game of odds. If <a data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3914\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/geology\/oldest-life-28092017\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">life emerging<\/a> is like winning the lottery, you need a lot of tickets to improve your odds.<\/p>\n<p>This is where things really get interesting, because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/space\/closest-rogue-planet-67423\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">number of these rogue planets<\/a> is staggering.<\/p>\n<p>Current estimates suggest there could be at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-many-rogue-planets-are-in-the-milky-way\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two ejected rogue planets<\/a> for every single star in our galaxy. Some surveys suggest the number could even be as high as 21 rogue planets per star. In a galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars, we are talking about a trillion wandering worlds. So, there are a lot of lottery tickets.<\/p>\n<p>If even a fraction of those worlds have Earth-sized moons, the total \u201chabitable real estate\u201d in the universe might be mostly in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this research could even help us understand how life emerged on Earth, the researchers conclude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese environments are interesting to model because they push planetary modelling into unusual regimes, but they also serve to understand the environments in which potential life precursors emerged on Earth,\u201d Tommaso Grassi, MPE Scientist.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to think life needs a star because Earth does. This study reminds us that a star may be only one way to pay the energy bill. Gravity can do it too. Pressure can help. Chemistry can conspire.
