Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona beamed Tuesday night when Eugenio Su\u00e1rez\u2019s name was brought up following his team\u2019s Cactus League game against the Cleveland Guardians.<\/p>\n
Because he was managing, all Francona knew was that Su\u00e1rez had a big hit and Venezuela won. Francona said \u2026<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udcac \u201cWe might not get him back, they may be going to Venezuela.\u201d <\/p>\n
Francona has been supportive of players playing in the WBC, but he also worried about players missing time and not getting the number of at-bats they\u2019d normally get in spring. <\/p>\n
Su\u00e1rez has played five Cactus League games and five WBC games for Venezuela, with 15 plate appearances for the Reds and 21 for Venezuela. Last season Su\u00e1rez had 62 plate appearances in spring for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Francona added \u2026<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udcac \u201cHe\u2019s gotten shorted at-bats from what he\u2019s got normally, but he\u2019s also got at-bats in stadiums with 50,000, so you hope the tradeoff works.\u201d <\/p>\n
Su\u00e1rez was just 4 for 20 in the WBC, but in addition to his championship-winning double, he also had a pair of home runs. Francona continued \u2026<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udcac \u201cIt\u2019s hard when you don\u2019t have your guys here, but it\u2019s good for baseball. It sounded like the atmosphere was great. That\u2019s good. That\u2019s really, really good.\u201d<\/p>\n
And now the WBC hero will return to the Reds this week.<\/p>\n
