When the pair sat down with Speedcafe ahead of the season-opening round in Melbourne, the trans-Tasman teammates spoke candidly about balance. Friendship versus rivalry, cooperation versus self-interest.<\/p>\n
On track, they insisted, there would be respect. Off it, a bond already forming inside Prema Racing.<\/p>\n
Days later, that theory was stress-tested in the most dramatic fashion possible.<\/p>\n

And, in many ways, it underlined the very tension they had predicted.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like it\u2019s quite a hard one, because at the same time we\u2019re both mature enough to know that we\u2019re not racing each other for the championship, we\u2019re racing another 28 people \u2013 including ourselves,\u201d Wharton told Speedcafe.<\/p>\n \u201cSo if we\u2019re creating enemies amongst each other and trying to make this into a rivalry, we\u2019re probably going to hurt ourselves even more.<\/p>\n \u201cBut at the same time, be teammates when we need to be. And if we\u2019re crashing for P5, I\u2019ll be quite upset with both of us.<\/p>\n \u201cSo it\u2019s about making sure we help each other, but then I\u2019m sure on the last lap if we\u2019re fighting for a win, all gloves will be off, and I feel like that\u2019s how it should be anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n Sharp, sitting alongside him pre-weekend, echoed the same philosophy.<\/p>\n \u201cI think inside the team we need to be pushing each other as much as possible. Because the faster I am and the faster James is, the faster we\u2019re both going to be,\u201d he told Speedcafe.<\/p>\n \u201cBut you know, at the end of the day, as James said, when it comes down to the last few laps, especially if we\u2019re fighting for a win, obviously there\u2019s going to be a level of respect there.<\/p>\n \u201cSo we\u2019re always going to race each other fairly, but I think at the end of the day we\u2019re both here racing for ourselves and racing for our championships.\u201d<\/p>\n In Melbourne, that fine line blurred.<\/p>\n Their clash came in the thick of an aggressive midfield battle, both drivers attempting to carve forward in a chaotic opening race of the year.<\/p>\n It was precisely the kind of scenario both had flagged as critical in a championship defined by tight margins and limited opportunities.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the end of the day it\u2019s round one,\u201d Wharton said before the weekend.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like we need to make sure we maximise this weekend to start in the right way for the championship.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the end of the day, in this championship as long as you\u2019re finishing inside of the top 10 every race, you\u2019re gonna be somewhere in the championship.<\/p>\n \u201cSo it\u2019s about consistency and making sure that you take the results when they\u2019re there and when they\u2019re not, maximise it.\u201d<\/p>\n Sharp, too, had stressed patience over panic.<\/p>\n \u201cI think if you can get momentum on your side early on, it makes a huge difference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut if that doesn\u2019t happen, then that\u2019s not the end of the world. And we\u2019ve got a long time to then chip away at it and get to the front.\u201d<\/p>\n That perspective now carries added weight.<\/p>\n With the cancellation of the Bahrain round leaving a lengthy gap before Monaco, the Melbourne fallout has effectively frozen the early narrative of their seasons.<\/p>\n Instead of momentum, both drivers are left with recovery \u2014 physically and competitively \u2014 before the European leg begins.<\/p>\n Yet if anything, their pre-season reflections suggest neither will view the setback as defining.<\/p>\n Both arrived in 2026 framing the campaign as pivotal. A second year in F3, a switch to Prema, and the reality of a narrowing pathway to Formula 1 had sharpened their focus.<\/p>\n \u201cFor me it\u2019s more just finishing the year knowing that I\u2019ve been consistent,\u201d Wharton said.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you can go to a team saying that you haven\u2019t put a mark on the car, haven\u2019t had a penalty, you haven\u2019t done a stupid thing throughout the whole 10 rounds, you\u2019re putting yourself in a good position.\u201d<\/p>\n Sharp\u2019s target was similarly process-driven.<\/p>\n \u201cIf I can be fighting for consistent podiums and wins throughout the year, but at the end of each weekend having said that I\u2019ve maximised everything I could,\u201d he said of his goals for 2026.<\/p>\n \u201cJust making sure that every time I\u2019m in the car, I make the most of the opportunity. And I don\u2019t leave any stones unturned.\u201d<\/p>\n There is, of course, an unavoidable contradiction now sitting alongside those ambitions.<\/p>\n The Melbourne clash represents the very scenario both were determined to avoid \u2014 intra-team contact, lost points, and unnecessary damage in a category where consistency is king.<\/p>\n But zooming out, it may yet prove an early-season lesson rather than a lasting scar.<\/p>\n Both drivers spoke openly about the value of adversity after difficult rookie campaigns in 2025, believing those experiences had made them more complete competitors.<\/p>\n \u201cI think definitely going into this year, I\u2019m definitely a better racing driver for it,\u201d Sharp said.<\/p>\n Wharton was even more blunt about the stakes.<\/p>\n \u201cLast year showed me that this sport doesn\u2019t wait around for you and it\u2019s very likely that this could be your last year no matter what year it is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cSo for me, I need to make sure that I maximise it and never let this be my last year.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd to be honest, coming into this year, I sort of know it is my last year if I want to make Formula 1 and that\u2019s something that I\u2019ve understood over this off season.\u201d<\/p>\n That urgency remains unchanged.<\/p>\n If anything, Melbourne has only intensified it, a harsh reminder of how quickly opportunity can slip in the lower formula.<\/p>\n Their friendship, too, will inevitably be tested.<\/p>\n As joked in the moments before the weekend began, there was always a chance the dynamic could shift.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have known each other for a while, but not that long either,\u201d Wharton explained.<\/p>\n \u201cWe only met in 2023 and from then on we\u2019ve been super close. But at the same time we\u2019ve always known of each other.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is a rivalry because we are Aussie and we are New Zealander, but at the same time we are quite close.<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe not at the end of the year. But we\u2019ll see!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe not after this weekend!\u201d Sharp added.<\/p>\n Two weeks on, that line lands differently.<\/p>\n But with a long season still ahead, and a significant pause before racing resumes, the broader story of their shared campaign is far from written.<\/p>\n The challenge now is whether the lessons they spoke about so clearly before Melbourne can be applied when it matters most.<\/p>\n Wharton and Sharp eye F3 glory in Prema link-up<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
