In their 40-13 start, their defense was second in the league at 108.3 points per 100 possessions. Since going 9-6 after the break, Detroit&#8217;s defense is still top 10, but at 112.1 points per 100 possessions. Their superpower is making sure teams can&#8217;t play their best.<\/p>\n<p>Their shot creation will come up in the postseason, and there&#8217;s only so much they can do around <a data-player-guid=\"c28c6569-86f0-3c1e-bcab-b946fbc06ff6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4432166\/cade-cunningham\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cade Cunningham<\/a> in the meantime. In his first three games, Tatum played 27 minutes before increasing to 32 minutes in his fourth and fifth games. The Knicks have improved with a top-five offense and a top-10 defense, both better than last season. That&#8217;s largely attributed to the narrative around Thibs teams being historically great defensively, the Knicks&#8217; up-and-down nature this season and the enormous, often suffocating expectations. The starters&#8217; minutes are down as Mike Brown has a deeper rotation.<\/p>\n<p>The vibes don&#8217;t feel great right now &#8212; but the vibes weren&#8217;t great last year, either. The true test will come in May and possibly June. The passage of time seems to color last year in ways that aren&#8217;t necessarily true. There&#8217;s an opportunity in front of the Knicks, and it&#8217;s time they recognize that. &#8212; Goodwill <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773843671_455_cle.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>How has <a data-player-guid=\"35b0f455-b1df-0986-121d-27d2b6c18122\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3992\/james-harden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Harden<\/a> given the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ec79ad1f-e6d2-7762-a2db-7fe97d35126b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/cle\/cleveland-cavaliers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> the confidence that he can help push the team past the Pistons, Celtics and Knicks?<\/p>\n<p>The Cavs have gone 12-6 since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/48077549\/how-james-harden-move-renewed-cleveland-cavaliers-faith-donovan-mitchell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">making the trade<\/a> for Harden, including going 11-4 in games with him in the lineup, and are looking much more like the team that began the season as one of the favorites in the conference. Cleveland has the second-best offensive rating in the NBA since the deadline as Harden&#8217;s passing has elevated the team on that side of the ball: He&#8217;s relieved an overtaxed <a data-player-guid=\"6482ece5-f903-92e2-ffdd-13901fdd3a49\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3908809\/donovan-mitchell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donovan Mitchell<\/a>, unlocked <a data-player-guid=\"2c854df9-a5a0-0096-9a6e-c13cefab21d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4066328\/jarrett-allen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jarrett Allen<\/a> in the pick-and-roll and delivered easy passes and wide-open looks for the shooters around him.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly for the Cavs, Harden has been available, a key reason why they wanted an upgrade for <a data-player-guid=\"eb092265-024f-9840-7f49-507cfcab5aab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4396907\/darius-garland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darius Garland<\/a> and why coach Kenny Atkinson told ESPN Harden&#8217;s arrival has given his team a &#8220;renewed confidence.&#8221;  &#8212; Jamal Collier <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773843672_601_mil.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>How will the next month impact <a data-player-guid=\"00985054-c4b3-4247-e825-ddf062d457c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3032977\/giannis-antetokounmpo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>&#8216;s and Doc Rivers&#8217; futures in Milwaukee?<\/p>\n<p>Not much. The team has insisted throughout its disappointing campaign that there was still enough time either for an in-season turnaround, to rebuild as a contender or to convince Antetokounmpo to sign another extension to remain in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the reality of the standings (trailing the No. 10 seed by 5\u00bd games) and the chasm between Milwaukee and true contenders is evident. No matter how the final month of the season ends, the Bucks will have to face that reality this summer. &#8212; Collier <\/p>\n<p>Projected end-of-season East standingsProjected Eastern Conference Standings<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the one East game you have circled on your calendar?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to cheat and pick two because the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"5a9c33b8-63fd-ff34-a833-925fe89320a6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/tor\/toronto-raptors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Raptors<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"81e3212c-30ef-9b1b-5edb-453b13ff265a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/mia\/miami-heat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Heat<\/a> meet on April 7 and April 9 in Toronto. But Oklahoma City knows how critical Williams is to its hopes of defending a title. The Spurs entered the homestand welcoming the diversity of playing styles, personnel and potential on-court situations they would encounter as they looked to sharpen up for the stretch run and their first playoff berth since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wembanyama missed one game during the homestand due to an ankle injury, but he returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/48209108\/wembanyama-do-all-showcase-propels-spurs-hornets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">produce his fifth straight game<\/a> with 25 points on 50% shooting or better from the field to tie LaMarcus Aldridge (2018) for the third-longest streak of such games by a Spur in the past 25 seasons. &#8212; Michael C. Minnesota&#8217;s roller-coaster act can be maddening, but the past couple of seasons featured plenty of ups and downs and ended with conference finals runs. The Wolves have slipped significantly on the defensive end this season, ranking ninth in efficiency, down from sixth last season and first in 2023-24.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve been especially bad since the All-Star break, allowing 116.4 points per 100 possessions, which ranks 21st during that span. That is a trend that must end for Minnesota to make another run. Wolves phenom <a data-player-guid=\"a2edb458-a371-3fba-ba5a-b24dd2fd2d9e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4594268\/anthony-edwards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Edwards<\/a> is also dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/48232817\/timberwolves-anthony-edwards-miss-knee-soreness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">right knee soreness<\/a>, and he will be reevaluated in one to two weeks. &#8212; MacMahon <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773843673_294_hou.png&#038;h=110&#038;w=110.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Can the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"78113ad4-1ac7-0c04-dada-388a6ff4e15e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/hou\/houston-rockets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Rockets<\/a> play in the Western Conference playoffs without a true point guard?<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely.
