Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic\u00a0The Exorcist, which were going to be another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who previously delivered a trilogy of\u00a0Halloween\u00a0sequels for Blumhouse and Universal). By the time Green\u2019s first\u00a0Exorcist\u00a0movie,\u00a0The Exorcist: Believer, reached theatres in October of 2023, the script for a sequel titled\u00a0The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was scheduled for an April 18, 2025 theatrical release, was ready and the story of the third film was mapped out\u2026\u00a0Believer\u2018s box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than \u201cokay,\u201d and the reactions were largely negative. (You can read our 4\/10 review\u00a0HERE<\/a>.) So the plans for\u00a0The Exorcist: Deceiver\u00a0were set aside and Green left the project.<\/p>\n

Last year, it was announced that the\u00a0Exorcist\u00a0sequel had been passed over to writer\/director\/producer Mike Flanagan, who was said to be working on a \u201cradical new take\u201d on the franchise.\u00a0And while Flanagan\u2019s movie won\u2019t be making its originally announced March 13, 2026 release date, it is moving forward, aiming to reach theatres on\u00a0March 12, 2027. Filming is underway in New York City \u2013 and several cast members, including Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson, have been spotted on the set! The set pics can be seen at the bottom of this article.<\/p>\n

Cast<\/p>\n

Johansson stars in this new Exorcist movie with John Leguizamo (Land of the Dead), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Jacobi Jupe (Hamnet<\/a>), Diane Lane (Let Him Go), Sasha Calle (The Flash), and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who recently worked with Flanagan on the Stephen King adaptation\u00a0The Life of Chuck.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also in the cast are Flanagan regulars Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., and Carla Gugino will all be showing up in his new movie. They note, \u201cMany of these actors featured in Flanagan\u2019s Netflix miniseries\u00a0Midnight Mass\u00a0and\u00a0The Fall of the House of Usher, with assorted members also appearing in the likes of\u00a0Oculus,\u00a0Hush,\u00a0Ouija: Origin of Evil,\u00a0Gerald\u2019s Game,\u00a0The Haunting of Hill House,\u00a0The Haunting of Bly Manor,\u00a0The Midnight Club, and\u00a0The Life of Chuck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benjamin Pajak of\u00a0The Life of Chuck\u00a0is in the mix as well, along with Gil Bellows (Love and a .45)\u2026 and, unless I\u2019m overlooking something, I think this is Bellows\u2019 first time working with Flanagan.<\/p>\n

The new\u00a0Exorcist\u00a0movie is coming our way from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan\u2019s Red Room Pictures banner. Alexandra Magistro serves as an executive producer for Red Room. David Robinson is producing the film for Morgan Creek, while Jason Blum and Ryan Turek serve as the respective producer and executive producer for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.<\/p>\n
