(ABC News: Steve Keen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Oxford Economics Australia economist Harry McAuley said the labour showed &#8220;early signs of slowing down in February&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Based on Tuesday&#8217;s rates decision and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, we have bumped up our unemployment forecasts,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We now expect near-term unemployment to rise slightly faster through 2026 and peak at just shy of 4.6 per cent in early 2027.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Rates could rise again in May<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Annual inflation was at 3.8 per cent in January, but Treasurer Jim Chalmers said there was a &#8220;very real&#8221; prospect that it would reach 5 per cent this year due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;With inflation set to approach 5 per cent, the renewed rise in the unemployment in February won&#8217;t prevent the RBA from hiking rates further,&#8221; Capital Economics Asia-Pacific head Marcel Thieliant said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-19\/rba-interest-rates-inflation-demand-petrol-prices-explainer\/106468646\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why did the RBA raise rates as households face petrol price double whammy?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">This week&#8217;s rate rise left ABC readers asking how hiking rates would stop inflation caused by unavoidable costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He says the increase in the unemployment rate can be explained by a rise in the number of people employed combined with an increase in the participation rate, resulting in almost 84,000 people looking for work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As a result, the unemployment rate jumped back up form 4.1 per cent to 4.3 per cent,&#8221; Mr Thieliant said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s still barely higher than the 4.2 per cent recorded last year and in line with the RBA&#8217;s forecast that it will reach 4.3 per cent by June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Most importantly, the RBA thinks that the labour market is still too tight to meet its inflation target.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Betashare chief economist David Bassanese says signs of a positive labour supply response, along with the lift in the unemployment rate, are likely to be welcomed by the RBA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My base case remains that the RBA is on track to raise rates in May, following another uncomfortably high March quarter CPI report in late April,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s unemployment rate rose to 4.3 per cent in February, up from 4.1 per cent, surprising economists.
