{"id":553732,"date":"2026-03-20T22:55:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T22:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/553732\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T22:55:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T22:55:11","slug":"last-man-standing-ultra-running-challenge-pushing-people-to-their-limits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/553732\/","title":{"rendered":"Last Man Standing ultra running challenge pushing people to their limits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tim Kacprzak started 2026 with a painfully simple challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Run each day, starting with 1 kilometre, and add another kilometre every 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Today is day 80, meaning almost back-to-back marathons for the Geelong ultra runner and sparky \u2014 who has taken leave from work to keep up with the monumental runs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the daily distance is getting out of hand, the cumulative total is already absurd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As of last night, Kacprzak had covered 3,160km \u2014 about the same distance as Sydney to Perth \u2014 but he&#8217;s done it in 10km loops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I am a little bit crazy,&#8221; he says with a laugh, sitting in the yard of his Bannockburn home near Victoria&#8217;s Geelong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tim Kacprzak wears a red hat and red s-hirt. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I do enjoy these challenges a little bit too much I think.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kacprzak, 43, is one of just two athletes still going in the Last One Standing Challenge, from a starting field of 314.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The other is Merlin Gammon, also known as the &#8220;Wizard of Run&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Gammon, 25, was in the final days of a run from Cape York to Tasmania when he started this fresh challenge. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think for me it&#8217;s about finding my own limit, and I&#8217;m finding that there&#8217;s new limits every day,&#8221; Kacprzak says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s got to a point where you&#8217;re just holding on because you&#8217;re just enjoying it too much &#8230; I think I can be the last one standing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>People looking to push their limits<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This is the second year of The Last One Standing challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s run by the group Hardcore Harry&#8217;s, which formed in 2024 and has since established itself as a platform for fitness challenges &#8220;that celebrate effort, grit and growth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You have some challenges which are arguably easy \u2014 10km a day, 5km a day \u2014 and then you have challenges that are designed to push people to their limits,&#8221; co-founder Ethan Fleming says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ethan Fleming\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/50cfe99a4456d2f6afd24ffeabd7f277.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ethan Fleming (left), says more people are taking part in extreme fitness challenges. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There has been a noticeable increase in the amount of people wanting to take on fitness challenge in recent years, particularly those at the more extreme end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In the last few years especially we&#8217;ve seen a three-to-four-times growth in the amount of people that take on these challenges, and the level of extreme that they go to the achieve these goals,&#8221; Mr Fleming says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think one of the reasons is we do live in a world where there&#8217;s so many creature comforts \u2026 and I think for people like these people, all these people that want to push themselves, they just want to have an arena where they can find their limits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s anything more powerful than setting yourself a goal and then exceeding it, and breaking that limitation on what you thought was possible.&#8221;&#8216;Why not see how far you can go?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Perth&#8217;s Margie Hadley, 45, is one of Australia&#8217;s best ultramarathon runners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She took up the sport after recovering from cervical cancer a little over a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;After cancer I think that just sort of, I decided just to do hard things, and ultra running is one of those hard things that I decided to do,&#8221; Hadley says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with a blond ponytail wears a white singlet, with sunglasses on her head.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/412e34039356453ccf54bb59cf56e6e0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Perth ultrarunner Margie Hadley finished third in the competition. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Like most who find themselves hooked by ultra running, Hadley is in it for the love of the pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Day 76 proved to be Hadley&#8217;s limit for The Last One Standing Challenge, when her body simply couldn&#8217;t keep it up. Her 2,869km effort was the third longest run of the competitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her response to why she repeatedly pushes herself to her physical and mental limits is simple.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the better question is &#8216;why not?&#8217; I mean, why not try to find your limit and see how far you can go?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The &#8220;why?&#8221; of ultra running is a common question.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2017-03-18\/where-to-start-when-you-havent-exercised-in-a-while\/8360262\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Where to start when you haven&#8217;t exercised in a while<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">How does someone who hasn&#8217;t exercised for years get moving in a way that&#8217;s enjoyable, sustainable and safe?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Kacprzak, it&#8217;s &#8220;the most extreme way to explore the limits of what you can do&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think there&#8217;s different levels to pushing beyond your limits, and when you stop at one point you don&#8217;t start at the bottom again, you start at that same point that you got to, and then you want to know what&#8217;s further, what else can I do?&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think a lot of people can learn that they&#8217;re capable of a hell of a lot more than what they think they are.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tim Kacprzak started 2026 with a painfully simple challenge.
