Williams, is the result of a year of consultations with more than 300 stakeholders, including manufacturers, brands, educators and policymakers in the textile, clothing and footwear sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s definitely a lot of concern in the industry about what the future is for fashion textile manufacturing,&#8221; AFC general manager Samantha Delgos said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sam is speaking in front of a microphone and stand at the strategy launch.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cf2c7821a8fd4df84b420b66340774f0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Samantha Delgos says geopolitical tensions show the importance of local manufacturing capabilities.\u00a0 (Supplied: Australian Fashion Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Over the past 12 months, the industry has suffered from geopolitical tensions, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-14\/australian-firms-manufacturing-china-caught-trump-tariffs\/105165444\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105165444\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global tariffs<\/a> and now the war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ninety-seven per cent of Australia&#8217;s clothing and textile products are manufactured offshore, which Ms Delgos says involves &#8220;complex supply chains&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Often [the garments] travel across multiple continents before it comes back to Australia or gets exported, and so those costs kind of add on each time it&#8217;s travelling, and being exported as well,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we do have these kind of recurring global supply chain shocks, which are kind of happening more and more frequently now, it just keeps putting the spotlight back on what can we do here locally.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-30\/push-to-bring-fashion-manufacturing-back-to-australia\/105338638\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fashion brands want to bring manufacturing home<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Experts say the local industry has been in decline for decades, with just 3 per cent of the clothing produced by local brands and designers made in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Delgos emphasised that the plan was not about competition or restoring large-scale manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can kind of look at best practice of what&#8217;s happening internationally so that we can really start to grow and scale,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits to cotton industry<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 10-year strategy is split into three sections \u2014 public procurement, revitalising the workforce and investing in modern machinery \u2014 and has the potential to greatly benefit Australia&#8217;s cotton industry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Birds eye view of a cotton paddock\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/212eff112d271c792fc9514a2b2ffe39.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia is a global producer and exporter of cotton. (ABC News: Scott Jewell\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She believes this is because fashion and textiles are seen as a feminised industry, with women making up 58 per cent of its manufacturing workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So there&#8217;s a sense of it as being insignificant or unimportant,&#8221; Dr Richards said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She is urging the government take the industry seriously, particularly as workforces across the world start to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It seems like weekly, if not daily, we&#8217;re seeing job cuts in big private-sector companies, so we&#8217;re needing to think about future jobs for our young people,&#8221;
