Michael Patrick King<\/a>, who created the series alongside Kudrow, echoed, \u201cAs I said to somebody once, this is a documentary, always. It\u2019s not fantastical. Lisa\u2019s ability to be Valerie is so unique, but it\u2019s a composite of everyone she\u2019s ever seen that\u2019s like this. We\u2019re all like this; we\u2019re all Valerie; we\u2019re all thinking we\u2019re not enough \u2014 the writers, the actors, the crew members. \n\tKudrow also explained the decision to make this the final season, despite the fact that she and King operate on an untraditional schedule of roughly one season per decade and could have a new idea in a few years. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhen we realized this is about her confronting \u2014 in her way not confronting \u2014 AI writing a sitcom that she\u2019s on, we realized, oh this is like the very beginning, Valerie on a reality show before there were Housewives anywhere,\u201d she said. \u201cSo it felt like this is now a trilogy and now it looks like the point of this whole thing is we were taking a snapshot of this industry at what was thought to be an extinction event.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tKing emphasized, \u201cWe\u2019re very practical, and we knew it took us a very long time for the universe to present to us another doorway to walk through. We had lots of ideas over the last 10 years, but none that were big enough to say we\u2019ll risk it again, we\u2019ll do it again,\u201d until it came to the threat of AI, where \u201cthe fears lead right into comedy for us, the idea that everyone is terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhat I like particularly about it as a subject is it\u2019s not just Hollywood, it\u2019s everywhere,\u201d he continued. \u201cWay back in the beginning of The Comeback people said, \u2018Oh it\u2019s a show about Hollywood and an actress.\u2019 Now it\u2019s a show about humans and jobs.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tOne key difference in the third season will also be the absence of Valerie\u2019s hairstylist and confidant Mickey Deane, following actor Robert Michael Morris\u2019 death in 2017. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt definitely made me not even consider doing any more after season two for a while,\u201d Kudrow admitted. \u201cAside from just missing Robert Michael Morris, Mickey is such a crucial character. That\u2019s sort of our audience, we can always pan over to Mickey when Valerie says something and he\u2019s like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if that made sense,\u2019 and still supporting her. So that was hard but then we realized Valerie may have also decided not to deal with it much when Mickey passed, but now she\u2019ll have to.\u201d <\/p>\n
