A day later, the populist outfit rocked the political establishment by out-polling the Liberal Party in South Australia. It is also <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/one-nation-now-wrenching-votes-from-labor-as-it-overtakes-coalition-20260315-p5oakr.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polling ahead of the Coalition<\/a> nationally.<\/p>\n<p>After <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/canavan-drops-buggered-littleproud-from-shadow-cabinet-20260316-p5oavc.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">months of confusion about how forcefully<\/a> to attack Hanson and her recruit Barnaby Joyce, the Coalition group reached consensus that it must attack Hanson and reject calls from conservative commentators to form some sort of right-wing coalition with her party.<\/p>\n<p>Five sources familiar with the opposition\u2019s strategy meeting, unable to talk about the confidential meeting publicly, confirmed elements of the discussion. The Liberal and Nationals directors, Andrew Hirst and Lincoln Folo, delivered briefings on voter attitudes towards One Nation, as the parties prepared to use social media to mobilise against One Nation ahead of the Farrer <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/a-protest-vote-is-brewing-in-sussan-ley-s-seat-but-it-won-t-be-simple-20260226-p5o5my.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">byelection sparked by Sussan Ley\u2019s retirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although Saturday\u2019s South Australian election was influenced by local factors, the surge of support for One Nation proved that Hanson could turn support in opinion polling into votes, although preference distribution may mean the party ends up with only one seat.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the Farrer byelection in NSW, Taylor is planning to announce the Coalition\u2019s own plan to cut the migration intake. But the opposition wants to highlight the folly of reducing net migration to zero, as Hanson proposes, by warning tradespeople how badly the building sector would be hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition MPs intend to target what they see as Hanson\u2019s hubris as she aims to supplant the Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals senator Matt Canavan received blowback from some sections of his right-wing base after he labelled <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/one-or-two-votes-in-it-littleproud-s-deputy-in-tight-battle-with-canavan-20260311-p5o9as.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hanson\u2019s brand of race politics divisive<\/a> earlier this month. The opposition is wary of being criticised for attacking Hanson personally given her tendency to portray herself as a persecuted figure speaking for the voiceless.<\/p>\n<p>Hanson has claimed she is aiming to win an election, a prospect Coalition MPs want to elevate in the public discourse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven her supporters think the prospect of her running the country is ridiculous,\u201d one Liberal MP familiar with party research said.<\/p>\n<p>Echoing remarks from frontbencher James Paterson, the opposition will also point out that 70 per cent of MPs elected under the One Nation banner have quit the party, and that Hanson had achieved few policy wins.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/malinauskas-on-the-cusp-of-victory-as-one-nation-hit-by-election-day-scandal-20260321-p5rmby.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SA Premier Peter Malinauskas voting with his family at Woodville Gardens School.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774158080_986_d7fc6476909206da183de4a6a5ec3578918e7264a87bf26c742d3b8f5a96d83e.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MPs who attended the Friday meeting acknowledged it was critical to differentiate the Coalition from One Nation by offering voters a compelling economic vision on tax and material living standards as it aims to release major policies midterm rather than just before the election as it did last term.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition health spokeswoman Anne Ruston blamed the state election collapse on the Coalition\u2019s inability to articulate its values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralians don\u2019t know what we stand for,\u201d she said on Sky News\u2019 Sunday Agenda, cautioning that One Nation would probably not hold on to such a high level of support. \u201cHistory would suggest to you that that\u2019s probably not the case.
