The NRL\u2019s interpretation of a penalty try is set to come under the microscope after a controversial decision saw Jonah Pezet awarded a try in Sunday\u2019s game between the Eels and Dragons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Parramatta five-eighth was tackled early by Dragons forward Jaydn Su\u2019A as he backed up in support onto an offload from Kitione Kautoga. <\/p>\n

It denied Pezet a fair shot at the ball and a potential try, but with Su\u2019A in position to tackle Pezet had he not made contact early and fullback Clinton Gutherson also looming in cover, the expectation was that at worst Su\u2019A would be sent to the sin bin. <\/p>\n

Instead, Chris Butler in the Bunker said that \u201cin our opinion\u201d if Pezet was able to catch the pass \u201ca try would have been scored\u201d as \u201cno defenders\u201d were in front of him.<\/p>\n

Butler could barely get through that sentence before both Fox League commentators Andrew Voss and Cooper Cronk voiced their disagreement, repeating \u201cno, no, no\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cBy the letter of the law we do have a degree of subjectivity but I would say if you threw it to the majority, the majority would come back (and say) no he is not certain to score at all,\u201d Voss said, while Cronk argued he could have supported a sin bin at worst.<\/p>\n

\u201cJaydn Su\u2019A is all over Jonah Pezet. If he doesn\u2019t touch him, he gets arms around him (and) he won\u2019t score that try,\u201d the premiership-winning halfback added.<\/p>\n

\u201cClint Gutherson is coming across as well. I\u2019m sorry, but that\u2019s not a penalty try. It\u2019s a penalty and maybe a sin bin but I can\u2019t agree with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the NRL\u2019s Laws and Interpretations document, a penalty try is awarded if the referee or review officials believe, in their opinion, \u201ca try would have been scored but for the unfair play of the defending team\u201d.<\/p>\n
