A body, believed to be that of a 35-year-old man who went missing after a boating mishap at the weekend, has been found in Tasmania’s far north-west, police say.<\/p>\n

“This is a tragic result and our thoughts are with the family and friends and loved ones,” Inspector Anthea Maingay said.<\/p>\n

Police said the man left the Montagu boat ramp west of Smithton about 5:30pm Saturday for a fishing trip with three other people.<\/p>\n

But by about 9pm, they were thrown into the water when their boat capsized.<\/p>\n

A 33-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and a six-year-old child were washed ashore near Robbins Island and were rescued some 16 hours later, about 1pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n

“Three people were located on Big Stony Island, north of Robbins Island,” Inspector Maingay said.<\/p>\n

“They were taken through to the North West Regional Hospital where they were assessed and kept overnight for observation.<\/p>\n

“Fortunately they were not injured.<\/p>\n

“This is a family \u2014 so that’s mum, dad and their son \u2026 they were all together.”\"Tasmania<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old was friends with the family.<\/p>\n

The trio were wearing life jackets, but the 35-year-old man, who is understood to have not been wearing a life jacket, could not be found.<\/p>\n

“My understanding is he did have a life jacket on at one point, but for other reasons [he] has taken it off, and unfortunately this has happened during the period where he wasn’t wearing it,” Inspector Maingay said.<\/p>\n

An extensive air and water search was conducted to try and find him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The search for the missing man continued late into the night on Sunday and recommenced this morning. (ABC News: Mackenzie Heard)<\/p>\n

“Sadly, they located the male this morning on the eastern side of Robbins Island,” Inspector Maingay said.<\/p>\n

It is understood that relatives raised the alarm when the group failed to return as expected.<\/p>\n

The vessel has not yet been retrieved.<\/p>\n
