(ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve booked out about a week and a half ahead at the moment [for servicing], which for this time of year is a bit above normal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re busy. Here&#8217;s a quick breakdown on why that happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Riding to work, you&#8217;re saving petrol, parking, insurance, depreciation \u2014 all those things,&#8221; Mr Palmer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way things are going in the Middle East, I think \u2026 it&#8217;s going to get worse before it gets better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Authorities have pointed to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-10\/why-fuel-prices-are-going-up-australia\/106437844\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106437844\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">panic buying in response to the war in the Middle East and the disruption to global supply chains as the cause of the fuel price hikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last week, ACT Energy and Water Minister Suzanne Orr told the Legislative Assembly she had been advised Canberra&#8217;s fuel stocks were not at a level that would require rationing \u2014 although legislative arrangements existed if needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But as the cost of petrol rises amid the war, Transport Minister Chris Steel says there has &#8220;never been a better time&#8221; to consider alternative transport modes.<\/p>\n<p>Switching to EVs, public transport<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A blue electric bus driving along a road. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c02dd8a586525d61ff7839c1c7aaac86.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are currently 106 electric buses in the ACT&#8217;s fleet, and the government is in the process of acquiring another 30. (Facebook: Transport Canberra)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Steel urged Canberrans &#8220;who have the means&#8221; to consider purchasing an electric vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s one that we want to encourage because we want to shift people into electric vehicles to support our climate goals, but it&#8217;s a really good way of saving money as well,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But he also touted public transport as the best way to get around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I&#8217;d say to Canberrans is that public transport is a really good, affordable option to avoid the high and increasing costs of fuel,&#8221;  Mr Steel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It costs potentially around $20 to fill up your battery with electricity, compared to $170-plus depending on your vehicle and increasing over time for petrol \u2014 so [public transport] is a really good option.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More services promised<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Announcing the completion of the new public transport interchange at Woden today, Mr Steel said there would be additional bus services across Canberra from school term three of this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a hard hat and high-vis vest stands at a large bus interchange with traffic lights and orange cones around it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e11bf6e4d87fcef40cd3a1993032a332.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Chris Steel says the new Woden Interchange will not have a significant impact on bus travel times.
