As of now, as a result of this crisis, we have lost about 140bcm.

“In that context, this crisis is at an extent now of two oil crisis and one gas crisis put all together.”

Then there were concerns about the supply of fertilisers, sulphur, helium.

Answering questions from Australian media, Mr Birol said Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one fifth of the world’s oil transits, was “very severe”.

Earlier this month, the IEA ordered the release of 400 million barrels of oil by its member nations, including Australia, the UK and the United States.

“We have never released so much oil to the markets, and it was not the easiest thing for all our member countries,” he said.

That measure reduced fuel prices, but only temporarily.

The IEA has since urged member countries to encourage citizens to reduce fuel consumption, including carpooling or working from home, and limit air travel.

“We are doing this, to be very frank, to reduce the pain on the economy,” Dr Birol.

“The single most important solution to this problem is opening up the Strait of Hormuz.”

Dr Birol would not rule out further releases, saying he was consulting with the governments in Asia and “on a daily basis in contact with colleagues” in North America and Middle East, as well as major consumer countries such as China.

“We will see. We will look at the markets. If it is necessary, of course, we will do it,” he said.

“But, we will look at the conditions, we will analyse and assess the markets, and discuss with our member countries.”

Australian households need to be “better informed” about the magnitude of the fuel crisis sparked by the US/Israel…

[11
3859,2095,2324,1724,64,63,689,7292,42040,99,2667,512,28486,275888,275892,9239,11301,164,2057,275886,275890,266746,98767,275884,130870,269425,275885,275887,275891,275284,5575,6897,941,275883,275882,256089,208915,9388,187436,2041,2067,677,267069,275893,12540,275894,5525,2614,275889,12000
post-558959","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-air-travel","tag-america","tag-anthony-albanese","tag-asia","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australia-and-new-zealand","tag-australian-capital-territory","tag-australian-households","tag-business","tag-canberra","tag-china","tag-chris-bowen","tag-consecutive-oil-crises","tag-consumer-countries","tag-eastern-asia","tag-eastern-europe","tag-economy","tag-europe","tag-expected-fuel-ships","tag-fait-birol","tag-fuel-consumption","tag-fuel-crisis","tag-fuel-crisis-action","tag-fuel-prices","tag-fuel-rationing","tag-fuel-reduction-measures","tag-fuel-shocks","tag-fuel-usage","tag-gas-crisis","tag-iran","tag-israel","tag-japan","tag-limiting-air-travel","tag-member-countries","tag-member-nations","tag-nathan-schmidt","tag-national-press-club","tag-newswire-news","tag-north-america","tag-northern-america","tag-oceania","tag-oil-crisis","tag-oil-transits","tag-southern-asia","tag-suggestion-emergency-powers","tag-ukraine","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-urged-member-countries","tag-western-asia
["GET
