Isis Sio, a 19-year-old female junior flyweight, was in a medically induced coma at a San Bernardino, California, area hospital following a brutal first-round knockout loss in the opening bout of the ProBoxTV card headlined by the Lester Martinez-Immanuwel Aleem WBC interim super middleweight title bout on Saturday night at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino.

Sio (1-3, 0 KOs), of Dickinson, North Dakota, squared off with three-time national amateur champion Jocelyn Camarillo (6-0, 1 KO), 21, of Coachella, California, but was overmatched. Camarillo trapped Sio against the ropes and unloaded a series of punches that knocked Sio out cold in 78 seconds.

Sio, who was convulsing, was treated for several minutes in the ring before being taken out on a stretcher and transported to Loma Linda University Health in nearby Loma Linda.

Sio, whose three previous fights were two weight classes heavier at junior bantamweight, also suffered a first-round knockout loss in her previous fight on Jan. 30 in Long Beach, California, but that was the result of a body punch.

ProBoxTV issued a statement on the situation on Sunday.

“On behalf of CEO Garry Jonas and the entire ProBox family we are praying for a speedy recovery for Isis Sio,” the statement said. “Ms. Sio is currently in a medically induced coma. Our thoughts are with her and her family at this very difficult time. Please join us in wishing for a full recovery.”

Typically, a fighter would be placed in a medically induced coma following surgery to relieve pressure from swelling and bleeding on the brain.
