{"id":559267,"date":"2026-03-23T15:35:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/559267\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T15:35:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:35:09","slug":"australias-generation-alpha-faces-185k-bill-over-lifetime-without-urgent-action-on-climate-crisis-report-finds-australian-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/559267\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s generation Alpha faces $185k bill over lifetime without urgent action on climate crisis, report finds | Australian economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The next generation of Australian workers will cop a $185,000 bill over their lifetimes if the country does not act more urgently to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/22\/saturated-northern-territory-nt-katherine-evacuated-tropical-cyclone-narelle-dump-rain-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">address the climate crisis<\/a>, according to new modelling by a team of young economists at Deloitte.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The new report finds that global heating consistent with the current projections would cost the average millennial approximately $130,000 over the rest of their lives, increasing to $165,000 for gen Z.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A gen Z Australian\u2019s lifetime income could be $165,000 lower by 2070 without further global action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For generation Alpha, the eldest of whom turn 16 this year, the bill stretches to $185,000 a person by 2070.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The report estimates the damage to worker productivity, infrastructure and property, as well as increased health risks and healthcare costs. The changing climate and more frequent and extreme natural disasters would undermine tourism and destabilise agriculture.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rhiannon Yetsenga, an associate director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/deloitte\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deloitte<\/a> Access Economics, said the analysis, co-authored by Rhiain Powell, Will Neumann and Chern Han Mah, highlighted how \u201ctaking action on climate change is not just an environmental or moral issue, it\u2019s really a question of intergenerational inequity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor this generation, climate change is not a distant threat but an immediate, lived experience with severe consequences,\u201d Yetsenga said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese compounded impacts slow growth, inflate costs, and jeopardise future wellbeing \u2013 especially for younger generations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alternatively, if today\u2019s decision-makers can drive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/mar\/23\/earth-being-pushed-beyond-its-limits-as-energy-imbalance-reaches-record-high\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate action needed<\/a> to reach net zero by the middle of the century, then millennials and generations Z and Alpha will avoid costs, respectively, of about $50,000, $70,000 and $80,000 over the course of their lives, the modelling shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The damage to generation Alpha\u2019s prosperity from a business-as-usual approach to addressing climate change will be nearly 10 times that suffered by boomers, and more than double the costs borne by gen X Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMany of these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/mar\/20\/disasters-climate-crisis-northern-territory-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">costs are already locked<\/a> in because emissions linger in our atmosphere for 30 years,\u201d Yetsenga said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think there is a lot of goodwill and people trying to do a lot of good things. But it\u2019s fair to say that young people are frustrated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor many young people they feel they can\u2019t trust the government to take action on the things that matter most to them, and the two things that came through strongly in our research were housing and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The economists modelled two scenarios: an \u201cinsecure youth prosperity\u201d scenario where global warming continues based on current policies, and a \u201csecure\u201d scenario where more aggressive action gets the world to net zero by 2050, and limits the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The model then estimates the loss of GDP per capita over the coming decades in both scenarios against an imagined world of no climate change, before discounting that future impact into dollars in today\u2019s terms for each generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Intergenerational burden\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The young economists advocate for a price on carbon as the most efficient mechanism to drive emissions reduction, but say expanding the safeguard mechanism would be a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The report argues that economists and policymakers must take a more holistic view of how we measure progress as a country, and especially that \u201ca growth model cannot be sustainable if it is not emissions-reducing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe idea would be to have sustainable growth \u2013 that we are not pursuing growth at all costs, but also considering the environment and how it affects different communities,\u201d Yetsenga said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The unbearable experience of walking in a heatwave of the future \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774280109_455_1440.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>The unbearable experience of walking in a heatwave of the future \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Yetsenga said taking action on climate change need not come at the cost of slower growth. She said the nation should pursue new green and sustainable industries, such as green iron and critical minerals, to \u201cfuture-proof\u201d the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think there is a big opportunity for Australia if it invests the right way and sets itself up for a green future. We are blessed as a country with an abundance of resources and land, sun and wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to send the message that we have to compromise, because done right, this could be an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ken Henry, a former Treasury secretary, said the Deloitte modelling showed the \u201cshifting of the intergenerational burden\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have been kicking this can down the road so future generations will have to bear more of the impact of climate change and pick up the tab for more climate action and the costs of adapting to climate change,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt some point if climate change is not addressed it poses an existential risk to human survival, so it\u2019s right up there.
