{"id":559347,"date":"2026-03-23T16:29:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/559347\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T16:29:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:29:10","slug":"sa-premier-warns-one-nation-poses-threat-to-federal-labor-as-marles-says-party-only-about-stunts-and-the-vibe-one-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/559347\/","title":{"rendered":"SA premier warns One Nation poses threat to federal Labor as Marles says party only \u2018about stunts and the vibe\u2019 | One Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Albanese government has sharpened its attacks on One Nation as a party of \u201cstunts and the vibe\u201d after the South Australian premier warned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/pauline-hanson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pauline Hanson<\/a> is a threat to Labor following its historic state election result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The federal Coalition is also dialling up the pressure, warning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/one-nation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Nation<\/a> to expect more scrutiny of its policy positions as it attempts to avert a SA-style collapse in other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One Nation could have up to seven MPs across both houses of the SA parliament after Saturday\u2019s ballot, where it outpolled the Liberal opposition with more than 22% of the primary vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While its vote was strongest in once-safe Liberal seats in regional and rural areas, the rightwing populist party also polled more than 30% in several outer suburban Labor electorates.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Labor is expected to retain all of those seats due to preference flows but the swings to One Nation demonstrate the risk it poses to both of the major parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked on Monday if One Nation was a threat at the federal level, the South Australian Labor premier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/21\/sa-state-election-2026-results-labor-confident-but-all-eyes-on-one-nation-vote-as-polls-close-in-south-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Malinauskas<\/a>, said: \u201cYes, I do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think we have got to treat this seriously. I don\u2019t think One Nation, or any political party for that matter, should be written off,\u201d Malinauskas told Nine\u2019s Today show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think it is worthy of not demeaning anybody or diminishing anyone else\u2019s point of view but understanding what informed that surge. And I think there are implications for my party as much as there are for the Liberal party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Laying out a potential template for his federal counterparts, the SA premier has put forward an alternative, progressive case for patriotism to counter Hanson\u2019s version of national pride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One Nation\u2019s sole lower house MP in Canberra, Barnaby Joyce, said Labor was targeting the party because it was viewed as the \u201cauthentic opposition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey have to play the man because they quite clearly know that One Nation clearly stands for something and clearly is the alternative to Labor,\u201d he told Seven\u2019s Sunrise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The deputy prime minister, Richard Marles, used question time to attack One Nation as a party that has \u201conly ever been about stunts and the vibe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/labor-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labor party<\/a> federal president, Wayne Swan, went further, claiming One Nation was offering \u201cno alternative economic agenda, just culture-war camouflage for a wealth concentration agenda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBarnaby Joyce\u2019s hollow triumphalism is revealing. He\u2019s cheering on a movement that flew to Mar-a-Lago with billionaires to learn how to run elections but hasn\u2019t spent a minute developing serious policies to address Australians\u2019 real challenges,\u201d Swan told Guardian Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is politics imported wholesale from the American and British hard right. These are the same forces that delivered 30 years of wage stagnation in the United States, hollowed out the middle class, and gave the world Donald Trump and Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The collapse of the Liberal vote in SA has prompted a fresh round of soul-searching inside the federal Coalition, where MPs hold competing views about how best to respond to One Nation\u2019s rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Angus Taylor-led opposition is widely expected to announce a new plan to lower immigration ahead of the 9 May Farrer byelection \u2013 the first federal test of Hanson\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Other MPs are pushing to instead prioritise economic policies, including tax reform, to help rebuild the party\u2019s economic credentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">SA Liberal senator and the party\u2019s state president, Leah Blyth, said voters were making a \u201cdeliberate choice\u201d to abandon it for One Nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe One Nation vote is not the problem, it is the symptom.
