CHARLOTTE \u2014\u00a0A milestone day saw Charlotte Women’s Tennis grab a 4-1 win over No. 43 Penn State on Monday, the program’s 10th consecutive triumph to reset the record books.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It surpassed a previous program record of nine consecutive wins set from Jan. 29, 2022, to March 11, 2022, during the 2021-22 season, and marked the highest-ranked win for the 49ers since upending No. 36 Furman last season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Charlotte has beaten four ranked teams during the streak, highlighted by Monday’s result over the Nittany Lions, and including No. 66 Maryland, No. 56 Rice, and No. 59 Georgia Tech. The streak includes wins over five power-conference opponents, to boot.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I’m really impressed with our singles today – we stamped our authority early and stayed locked in until the end,” head coach Anthony Davison<\/a> said. “Penn State played a very strong doubles point, but the mental strength we showed to bounce back was impressive. Lots of the work we’ve been doing in practice is paying off, and the ladies deserve this.”\u00a0<\/p>\n After Charlotte dropped the doubles point, Shona Nakano<\/a> began the team’s clinching push.\u00a0<\/p>\n She bounced back quickly from a loss at No. 2 doubles to grab a 6-1, 6-1 win over Penn State’s Maiko Uchijima in the No. 3 singles slot. Lucia Aranda<\/a> followed her lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to give Charlotte a lead it never relinquished.\u00a0<\/p>\n Prisca Abbas’<\/a> 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 set the stage for Sara Suchankova’s<\/a> clinching, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Penn State’s Patricia Grigoras, improving her team-best record to 12-1. Abbas’ result also marked her 10th among Charlotte’s dual-match leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n Up Next<\/p>\n Charlotte heads to Williamsburg, Va., for Saturday’s doubleheader against Liberty and William & Mary.\u00a0<\/p>\n The 49ers will begin the day at 9:30 a.m. with a neutral-site bout against the Flames before finishing the day at 3 p.m. against hosting William & Mary.\u00a0
