What was once an IT function is now a strategic pillar of race-day performance.<\/p>\n<p>A digital arms race behind the scenes<\/p>\n<p>At Williams Racing, trackside systems resemble a mobile data centre. Engineers operate local compute clusters in the garage, process telemetry in real time, and sync enriched datasets to the cloud for deeper analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take raw telemetry, enrich it, and then make it available across both trackside and cloud platforms,\u201d explained James Kent.<\/p>\n<p>This hybrid architecture enables teams to simulate race scenarios, compare driver performance, and model thousands of potential race outcomes using dynamic simulations.<\/p>\n<p>But it also dramatically expands the attack surface \u2014 stretching from the garage to the cloud, across multiple countries, networks, and devices. As Darren Guccione has noted, modern environments like this are no longer defined by a single perimeter, but by thousands of constantly shifting access points.<\/p>\n<p>Identity is the new security perimeter<\/p>\n<p>To manage this complexity, teams are increasingly relying on identity-based security models \u2014 a shift reinforced by partnerships with cybersecurity providers like Keeper Security.<\/p>\n<p>According to Keeper CEO Darren Guccione, the definition of \u201cuser\u201d has fundamentally changed in environments like Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are now four types of users: humans, machines, non-human identities, and AI agents,\u201d Guccione said. \u201cMost organisations aren\u2019t set up to manage that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly relevant in F1, where systems, sensors, engineers, and AI models all interact in real time. Every connection \u2014 whether it\u2019s a trackside engineer logging in, a cloud workload syncing data, or an AI model accessing telemetry \u2014 must be continuously verified.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than relying on traditional network boundaries, teams are adopting a zero trust approach, enforcing least-privilege access across every identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something deviates from expected behaviour, we can terminate access instantly,\u201d Guccione said.<\/p>\n<p>Edge environments and constant global risk<\/p>\n<p>Unlike traditional enterprises, Formula 1 teams operate in constantly shifting, high-risk environments \u2014 from Melbourne to Monaco to Shanghai \u2014 each with unique infrastructure and threat profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Trackside systems are effectively \u201cedge environments\u201d: temporary, high-performance setups that must be deployed quickly and secured immediately.<\/p>\n<p>This creates a unique challenge. As Guccione has highlighted in broader enterprise contexts, security must now travel with the identity \u2014 not the location.<\/p>\n<p>In Formula 1, that means ensuring the same level of protection applies whether a user or system is in a factory, a hotel, or a race garage halfway across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The growing risk of insider threats<\/p>\n<p>One of the most significant shifts in cybersecurity is the rise of insider risk \u2014 often unintentional.<\/p>\n<p>With the proliferation of AI tools, cloud services, and automated workflows, employees can inadvertently introduce vulnerabilities by integrating unverified systems into critical environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be malicious,\u201d Guccione noted. \u201cIt can be inadvertent \u2014 but still dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a sport where competitive advantage is measured in milliseconds, even a minor data leak \u2014 whether from a misconfigured system or an over-permissioned account \u2014 could expose sensitive telemetry, strategy, or intellectual property.<\/p>\n<p>To counter this, teams are embracing zero knowledge architectures, ensuring that sensitive data remains encrypted and inaccessible \u2014 even to service providers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Data as competitive advantage \u2014 and liability<\/p>\n<p>For drivers like Carlos Sainz Jr., data is central to performance.<\/p>\n<p>After each session, drivers analyse telemetry alongside engineers, comparing braking points, corner speeds, and racing lines \u2014 not just against teammates, but across the entire grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can compare myself to every driver, corner by corner,\u201d Sainz said. \u201cThat\u2019s how we improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But this data is also highly sensitive. In the wrong hands, it could reveal strategic insights, setup decisions, or performance weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>This is where identity-centric security becomes critical \u2014 ensuring that access to this data is tightly controlled, continuously monitored, and instantly revocable if risk is detected.<\/p>\n<p>AI, automation, and non-human identities<\/p>\n<p>Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Formula 1 operations \u2014 from predictive modelling to automated race strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are experimenting with:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nSpeech-to-text analysis of driver-engineer communications&#13;<br \/>\nPredictive modelling of race scenarios&#13;<br \/>\nAutomated setup optimisation based on historical data&#13;<\/p>\n<p>By analysing years of telemetry and communication data, AI systems can uncover patterns that would be impossible for humans to detect manually.<\/p>\n<p>But as Guccione points out, AI also introduces a new category of risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese AI agents are acting autonomously, accessing systems, making decisions \u2014 but they still need to be governed like any other identity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, AI is not just a tool \u2014 it\u2019s an active participant in the environment, requiring the same level of access control, monitoring, and governance as a human user.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers as part of the security ecosystem<\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity in Formula 1 doesn\u2019t stop at engineers and infrastructure \u2014 it extends to drivers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Competing in a highly public, globally connected environment, drivers face risks ranging from device compromise to social engineering and account takeovers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve asked professionals what I should be doing \u2014 VPNs, secure connections, things like that,\u201d Sainz said.<\/p>\n<p>This reflects a broader trend: in modern organisations, every individual \u2014 regardless of role \u2014 is part of the security perimeter.<\/p>\n<p>A global platform for cyber innovation<\/p>\n<p>Formula 1\u2019s global footprint has made it an ideal proving ground for cybersecurity innovation.<\/p>\n<p>For companies like AI-driven systems and protecting intellectual property, cybersecurity has become inseparable from racing success.<\/p>\n<p>And as the sport continues to evolve, one thing is clear: in a world defined
