Last week, Nvidia\u2019s public reveal of DLSS 5\u2014and its \u201cgenerative AI\u201d enhanced glow-ups of gaming scenes\u2014drew widespread condemnation from the gaming community<\/a>. In a podcast published Monday, though, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang tried to differentiate the technology\u2019s optional, artist-guided graphical enhancements from the \u201cAI slop\u201d that Huang says he\u2019s not a fan of.<\/p>\n

As part of a nearly two-hour-long interview with the Lex Fridman Podcast<\/a>, Huang was asked to explain the \u201cdrama\u201d around DLSS 5 and \u201cthe gamers online [that] were concerned that it makes games look like AI slop.\u201d Huang responded that he \u201ccould see where they\u2019re coming from, because I don\u2019t love AI slop myself\u2026 all of the AI-generated content increasingly looks similar and they\u2019re all beautiful, so\u2026 I\u2019m empathetic towards what they\u2019re thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, Huang said DLSS 5 is decidedly separate that kind of \u201cslop,\u201d because it \u201cis 3D conditioned, 3D guided.\u201d The artists behind a game are still the ones creating the in-game structural geometry and textures that form the \u201cground truth structure\u201d that DLSS 5 works from, Huang said. \u201cAnd so every single frame, it enhances but it doesn\u2019t change anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

For the most part, though, gamers haven\u2019t been worried about DLSS 5 creating trippy new content from the ground up like some generative AI world models<\/a>. Instead, the worry is that DLSS 5\u2019s visual \u201cenhancements\u201d could end up smoothing out many disparate games toward a single, flattened, homogenized photo-realism standard.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a misunderstanding of how DLSS 5 works, Huang said. It\u2019s not a technology where a game ships in one state and \u201cthen we\u2019re gonna post-process it,\u201d he said.
