The Trump Organization paid for the Gold Coast mayor’s meals, accommodation, and transfers during a visit to Mar-a-lago earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tom Tate visited the luxurious estate days before an Australian developer signed a deal to build a Trump-branded tower at Surfers Paradise.<\/p>\n

Cr Tate met with US President Donald Trump and his son, Eric, in Florida between February 12 and February 14 as part of a broader month-long overseas trip to Italy, the UAE and the USA.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New details of the trip were revealed on Tuesday in Cr Tate’s latest register of interests document.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mayor is required to declare gifts valued at $500 or more, or multiple gifts totalling $500 or more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The register shows two gifts from the Trump Organization: Hospitality \u2014 meals received over two days at Mar-a-lago USA, accommodation at Mar-a-Lago, and vehicle transfers to and from Miami International Airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cr Tate told the ABC earlier this month that he was invited to the estate as “mayor of the city.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“That’s a gift to the city, not to me,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’m pretty sure Tom Tate wouldn’t have gotten an invite; the mayor of the Gold Coast got an invite.”<\/p>\n

The February meeting occurred just before the signing of a $1.5 billion deal between Australian property developer Altus CEO David Young and the Trump Organization’s executive vice-president Eric Trump.<\/p>\n

The ABC has previously revealed Mr Young has twice gone bankrupt.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

The 91-storey tower on Trickett Street in Surfers Paradise would feature a six-star resort hotel, 270 luxury apartments, a retail plaza and a beach club.<\/p>\n

An online petition opposing the Gold Coast Trump Tower has already received tens of thousands of signatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cr Tate told ABC News he was not asked for any assurances that he or the council would approve the Trump Tower building application when it is lodged.<\/p>\n
