NBC has announced that the 51st season of \u201cSaturday Night Live<\/a>\u201d will hit the airwaves (and Peacock, too!) October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since \u201cSNL<\/a>\u201d has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series\u2019 most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie<\/a> \u2014\u00a0about but unaffiliated to the series \u2014\u00a0about the making of its first episode.<\/p>\n

The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep<\/a> appeared in her very first \u201cSNL\u201d sketch, for heaven\u2019s sake. Former cast legends like Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tracy Morgan, Kristin Wiig\u2026 there could be an entire article just citing the names that made up the 50th, and how that all went down. Oh wait, we had one of those, right here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One star, however, that did not enjoy the evening was former cast member Pete Davidson<\/a>, who told Seth Meyers<\/a> that the anniversary audience was \u201cterrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible audience \u2019cause it\u2019s just famous people, and famous people only like themselves,\u201d Davidson said, admitting his own culpability. \u201cIt\u2019s true! I\u2019m guilty of this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

One big name, however, did live up to the hype for Davidson, and it was the Oscar-winner he happened to be seated right beside. <\/p>\n

\u201cMeryl rules,\u201d he said. \u201cIn typical \u2018SNL\u2019 fashion, they don\u2019t tell you anything. You don\u2019t even know what\u2019s going on. I get to my seat and I just look and I\u2019m like, \u2018This can\u2019t be right.\u2019 And it was Meryl Streep, and I just sat down and I was like like, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry\u2026 I\u2019m so sorry that I\u2019m sitting next to you. You\u2019re the best.\u2019 And she was very nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davidson is currently starring in \u201cThe Home,\u201d which hit theaters on July 25. The film\u2019s director, James DeMonaco<\/a>, told IndieWire that Davidson has a depth that \u201cSNL\u201d viewers may not fully recognize. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say his public persona is so different from who he really is, but people know him as this really funny guy, and I know him more as a soulful person who experienced a lot of tragedy early in his life,\u201d DeMonaco said. Davison lost his father, a firefighter, during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. \u201cI think he related to [his \u2018The Home\u2019 character] Max in a way, because they both experienced trauma in their youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davidson, in addition to having a film currently in theaters, was recently a voice in the animated \u201cDog Man,\u201d a part of the \u201cRiff Raff\u201d ensemble, and just premiered \u201cThe Pickup\u201d on Amazon Prime.
