An alleged fuel thief accused of seriously injuring a Perth petrol station worker in a hit-and-run was told he will likely go to prison if convicted of the “extremely serious” charges.<\/p>\n

Glenn Willem Francis McCagh faced court on Tuesday after he allegedly struck a staff member who tried to stop him driving off without paying for fuel at an Armadale service station in Perth’s south-east on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The worker sustained serious facial injuries and was taken to hospital.<\/p>\n

The magistrate described the charges against Mr McCagh as “extremely serious”, indicating an immediate term of imprisonment was very likely if he were to be convicted.<\/p>\n

Mr McCagh was represented by a legal aid lawyer who said he suffered from Crohn’s disease and was unemployed, with his partner working full-time to support the family.<\/p>\n

The court heard the father-of-four had a limited prior criminal record, which consisted mostly of traffic offences.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old was remanded in custody while awaiting his home detention report, and will make a bid for bail next month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The prosecution opposed bail and told the court the incident had been largely recorded on CCTV.<\/p>\n

“It would appear to be a strong prosecution case,” the magistrate said.<\/p>\n

“To ensure the safety of the community, only home detention bail is appropriate.”<\/p>\n

Fuel thefts likely to increase<\/p>\n

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said “common sense” would suggest fuel drive-off incidents are likely to increase.<\/p>\n

“It really just elevated in the last few weeks, so I think as we collect our first group of statistics after a month or so we’ll have a better picture,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But one would imagine, at the prices they’re at, sadly some people will make that decision.”<\/p>\n

The Commissioner urged people to be cautious of stopping vehicles, for personal safety.<\/p>\n

“Even police are trained to not try and stop a vehicle if you are not in a vehicle, and I think that’s a message for everyone,” he said.<\/p>\n

WA government minister Simone McGurk said there was no excuse for fuel theft and maintained consumers across the state have access to enough fuel.<\/p>\n
