However, speaking with The Daily Telegraph, Bennett slammed the rule for robbing one of the biggest jobs in rugby league of some of the best candidates. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a ridiculous rule,\u201d Bennett told The Daily Telegraph. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey (the ARL Commission) must think the Australian players can just coach themselves and us NRL coaches are just taking up money and space.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want the best players playing for Australia and we want the best players playing Origin – yet we don\u2019t want the best coaches in charge of the national team.\u201d <\/p>\n
Bennett was quick to defend Walters\u2019 appointment, given he was an NRL coach not that long ago and has served his country well as a player. <\/p>\n
However, Walters was only made coach on a short-term deal for three games and Bennett is concerned about the long-term future of the Kangaroos post. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not a shot at Kevin, he\u2019s been an NRL coach and he will do a great job, he\u2019s qualified, but what\u2019s the longer-term plan beyond Kevin?\u201d Bennett said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s 17 clubs now (in the NRL) and there\u2019s going to be 18 and 19 soon (with the addition of Perth in 2027 and PNG in 2028).<\/p>\n
\u201cThis policy rules out dozens of coaches.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got the best coaches in the NRL and if they want to do it (coach Australia), then they should have the opportunity to do it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a silly rule, it\u2019s going to come back and hurt them at some point down the track, I can assure you of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bennett fumed that NRL coaches are the best candidates because they keep up with the current trends in rugby league. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey must think coaches don\u2019t do anything for teams,\u201d Bennett said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey think we just get the sack.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nonsense that a club coach can\u2019t handle the Australian job.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe only play a few Tests a year, it\u2019s not a full-time job.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite Bennett\u2019s staunch opposition, V\u2019landys is adamant the ARLC policy won\u2019t be changed and defended the rule going forward. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a conflict of interest, simple as that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we pick one club coach, all the other clubs are upset.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn NRL coach is getting paid by their club, so their whole and total concentration should be on that club.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though the clubs don\u2019t say it, they want their coach full-time and the other clubs see it as a conflict because naturally coaches develop a loyalty to players.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no appetite to revisit the policy.\u201d<\/p>\n
