Anasta played devil’s advocate and asked if Te\u2019o was being impatient in wanting to fast-track his head coaching ambitions and pointed out that the Broncos defence was only seventh best last season despite winning the title. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo you\u2019re a defensive coach, you can\u2019t just blame it on attitude, it could be their system,\u201d Anasta said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey were seventh last year in defence, which is unusual to win a competition with defending seventh best. Normally you\u2019ve got to be top-four or top-five.\u201d <\/p>\n
Read interjected: \u201cBut I think that\u2019s being really unfair on Ben Te\u2019o.\u201d <\/p>\n
But Anasta shot back: \u201cBut hang on don\u2019t you think it is being really unfair on Madge too?\u201d <\/p>\n
However, Read noted the fact Maguire wanted to keep Te\u2019o is evidence he was doing a good job for the Broncos. <\/p>\n
\u201cMadge wanted him to hang around, he couldn\u2019t be doing too bad a job,\u201d Te\u2019o said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was Ben\u2019s decision. This wasn\u2019t Madge forcing him out the door or calling for his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cBen made this decision and he made it purely because I don\u2019t think he felt like that environment was conducive to him and his coaching future. He didn\u2019t want to be there anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou said, assistant coaches have got to be patient, but Ben is an ambitious guy and wants to be a head coach one day, there\u2019s no doubt about that,\u201d Read said on NRL 360. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis has got nothing to do with pursuing a head coaching role. It\u2019s got everything to do with a slow build-up that\u2019s hung over from last season, it carried through the off-season and it got to a point where he didn\u2019t feel like he could be at that footy club anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n

Read put down the Broncos\u2019 poor start to the season defensively as an attitude thing and the buck stops with the head coach. <\/p>\n
\u201cBilly Slater wanted him with the Queensland team. Josh Hannay wanted him on the Gold Coast,\u201d Read said. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s obviously got some ability and I would argue that the first couple of weeks, there\u2019s no argument they were poor defensively, but I think that was an attitude thing and that falls on the head coach as much as it does any other coach in that footy organisation. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t tell me those blokes, the way they played in the first two rounds, the way they defended against Hull KR, that was a technical thing. For me, that was all about attitude and those blokes having the wrong attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the varying theories on why Te\u2019o left the Broncos, Read put it down to a lack of respect shown to Te\u2019o within the organisation. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis wasn\u2019t a philosophical difference,\u201d Read said. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy understanding is about how he was treated, how he was spoken to, how he was respected within the organisation. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not about Origin and not being able to coach Origin. That\u2019s been talked about ad nauseam. It\u2019s got nothing to do with that. And if it\u2019s got anything to do with it, it\u2019s a very small part of it. It\u2019s about that he didn\u2019t feel like that environment was the right environment for him to be in, to grow as a coach. <\/p>\n
