Broncos captain Adam Reynolds says he was shocked by Ben Te\u2019o\u2019s resignation as assistant coach as speculation mounts Te\u2019o could reunite with Wayne Bennett at the Rabbitohs. <\/p>\n
Te\u2019o has quit the Broncos following a verbal bust-up with head coach Michael Maguire ahead of Brisbane\u2019s game against the Melbourne Storm last week. <\/p>\n

Join now and get your first month for just $1.<\/a><\/p>\n The 39-year-old had helped the Broncos win a droughtbreaking premiership last season as the club\u2019s defensive coach, but he has walked out just a month into the new season. <\/p>\n It remains unclear exactly what was behind Te\u2019o\u2019s decision to quit, with reports a clash of style with Maguire and the Broncos blocking a bid to be an Maroons assistant under Billy Slater were contributing factors. <\/p>\n Reynolds has responded to the shock departure, telling Triple M on Wednesday: \u201cStill a bit in shock, don\u2019t know exactly what went on, but he\u2019s a wonderful coach.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of the success we had last season is due to Ben Te\u2019o. We don\u2019t know exactly what goes on or what went on.<\/p>\n \u201cNo doubt discussions can become heated at times, but I don\u2019t see that as anything out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously it\u2019s a huge loss. He\u2019s a big part of our squad. He\u2019s a big part of our team. A big reason why our defence is the way it is and we are still a bit in shock.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a great coach and no doubt will be a great coach in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n Te\u2019o has been linked with an assistant role at the Gold Coast Titans under Josh Hannay, but NRL 360\u2019s Braith Anasta floated the possibility Te\u2019o could reunited with Bennett at Souths, the club he won a premiership for as a player in 2014. <\/p>\n \u201cWhat about the rumours of South Sydney?\u201d Anasta said. \u201cHis relationship with Wayne, Payne Haas going there, is that a possible landing spot?\u201d<\/p>\n The Daily Telegraph\u2019s Brent Read said: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t rule it out, he almost went there a few years ago and I think Ben would be happy to move back to Sydney.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019ve got a great relationship. He talks to Wayne, so I wouldn\u2019t put a line through that. I don\u2019t think that will happen this year, because their staff\u2019s pretty settled.<\/p>\n \u201cBut if there\u2019s changes next year… you wouldn\u2019t be surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n Read added: \u201cMadge wanted him to hang around, he couldn\u2019t be doing too bad a job.<\/p>\n \u201cBen made this decision and he made it purely because I don\u2019t think he felt like that environment was conducive to him and his coaching future. He didn\u2019t want to be there anymore.<\/p>\n \u201cThis has got nothing to do with pursuing a head coaching role. It\u2019s got everything to do with a slow build-up that\u2019s hung over from last season, it carried through the off-season and it got to a point where he didn\u2019t feel like he could be at that footy club anymore.<\/p>\n \u201cIt isn\u2019t because of a philosophical difference about defence or the way they should play.<\/p>\n \u201cMy understanding is about how he was treated, how he was spoken to, how he was respected within the organisation.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not about Origin and not being able to coach Origin. That\u2019s been talked about ad nauseam. It\u2019s got nothing to do with that. And if it\u2019s got anything to do with it, it\u2019s a very small part of it. It\u2019s about that he didn\u2019t feel like that environment was the right environment for him to be in, to grow as a coach.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd it got to a point, this tells you how untenable it was, that he walked away. That tells you how bad the situation was.\u201d<\/p>\n The Daily Telegraph\u2019s Michael Carayannis described the situation at the Broncos as an \u201cimplosion\u201d by a premiership winning team.<\/p>\n \u201cThe rhetoric out of Brisbane for the past six months or so has been that Ben Te\u2019o was the buffer between Madge and the players a little bit in terms of softening the message that was delivered,\u201d Carayannis said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an unprecedented implosion from a premiership winning team.\u00a0The only thing I can compare it to is when Des Hasler walked out on Manly all those years ago to join Canterbury after winning the premiership.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cBut that was just one guy. Since they\u2019ve won the comp,\u00a0Payne Haas gone, Ben Te\u2019o is gone, all the rumblings in and around the club. There\u2019s been a lot that\u2019s happened and we\u2019re up to round 4.
