{"id":563603,"date":"2026-03-25T15:33:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T15:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/563603\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T15:33:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T15:33:12","slug":"massive-betrayal-iranian-nationals-with-valid-tourist-visas-blocked-from-entering-australia-for-six-months-australian-immigration-and-asylum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/563603\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Massive betrayal\u2019: Iranian nationals with valid tourist visas blocked from entering Australia for six months | Australian immigration and asylum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iranian tourists will be banned from entering Australia for the next six months after the home affairs minister, Tony Burke, triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/10\/labor-moves-to-block-some-temporary-visa-holders-traveling-to-australia-amid-middle-east-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tough new immigration laws<\/a> over concerns visitors may not be able to return to Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ban could apply to up to 7,200 Iranians with valid tourist visas \u2013 though some may still be given the chance to enter the country under special consideration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The move has further enraged refugee and humanitarian advocates, who criticised the Albanese government for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/10\/labor-moves-to-block-some-temporary-visa-holders-traveling-to-australia-amid-middle-east-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swiftly passing the \u201cappalling\u201d laws<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Burke announced on Wednesday evening the control determination order would apply to all Iranians on tourist visas for the next six months, a move the government said was in the national interest amid rapidly changing global conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are many visitor visas, which were issued before the conflict in Iran which may not have been issued if they were applied for now,\u201d Burke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDecisions about permanent stays in Australia should be deliberate decisions of the government, not a random consequence of who had booked a holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Australian government is closely monitoring global developments and will adjust settings as required to ensure Australia\u2019s migration system remains orderly, fair and sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The order only applies to people with a valid tourist visa outside the country. An order can only last for six months before the minister has to apply for it again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government said \u201csympathetic consideration\u201d would be given to the Iranian parents of Australian citizens. Others on tourist visas needing to travel can apply for a permitted travel certificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Officials for the home affairs department revealed earlier this month there were more than 7,200 temporary visa holders within Iran, with the number of temporary visa holders growing to more than 40,000 across the broader region affected by the conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, the temporary entry ban will only apply to holders of tourist visas \u2013 also known as subclass 600 visas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nos Hosseini, spokesperson for the Iranian Women\u2019s Association, said the decision was \u201cdisappointing\u201d but not a surprise after the bill was quickly passed last sitting fortnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think, given the circumstances, it should really be a time of compassion,\u201d she told Guardian Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAs a community, we are grieving. We are under immense stress, and this was not the type of announcement we were expecting to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Warringah MP, Zali Steggall, said the \u201csweeping, unchecked\u201d powers posed serious risks that warranted a further look by parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are now seeing the real-world impact \u2013 thousands of people who followed the rules, paid fees, and made plans in good faith are being left in limbo,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cInvalidating lawfully obtained visas undermines confidence in our entire migration system and sets a dangerous precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Greens senator, David Shoebridge, accused the government of pretending to care about the plight of Iranians under the regime to justify support for the US-Israel war, only to later drop them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTime and time again, it is the Labor party that passes the cruellest laws targeting refugees. One Nation and Liberals may cheer Labor on, but it is Labor pulling the trigger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cToday\u2019s order puts the lie to the pretence that Labor is supporting the illegal US and Israeli war on Iran to help the Iranian people. They could not care less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre said the government\u2019s decision was a \u201cmassive betrayal\u201d and a \u201cbreathtaking moral failure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn the moment that people need safety the most and their country is being torn apart, the Albanese government is slamming the door closed on people from Iran,\u201d Jana Favero, the centre\u2019s deputy chief executive, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is a cruel move that adds unnecessary trauma and harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The temporary visa bans were first revealed hours after Burke had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/09\/iran-women-football-team-australia-asian-cup\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">facilitated asylum applications<\/a> from members of the Iranian women\u2019s football team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey are welcome to stay in Australia,\u201d Burke told an early morning press conference in Brisbane this month. \u201cThey are safe here, and they should feel at home here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the end, seven were offered and accepted asylum offers before five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/16\/fifth-iranian-football-player-leaves-australia-after-initially-accepting-offer-of-asylum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changed their minds and returned to Iran<\/a>.
