Formula 1\u2019s popularity is now attracting Chinese car manufacturers to the sport, with BYD and Geely being the front-runners to become the first companies from their country to be an integral part of Grand Prix racing.<\/p>\n

Geely\u2019s interest in Formula 1 is not new, as already in the 2024 Monaco Grand a delegation of the car manufacturer met with the management of the Alpine team, the goal being to discuss a possible take over of the French operation.<\/p>\n

At the time, Renault\u2019s CEO, Luca de Meo, was not particularly keen on selling the team, while actively looking for new shareholders that would invest in the squad, so negotiations stalled and the Chinese company also started to look elsewhere for alternatives.<\/p>\n

The manufacturer\u2019s new CEO, Gui Shengyue, as in the Shanghai Internacional Circuit last weekend, holding meetings with Stefano Domenicali and other stakeholders, as Geely\u2019s interest in joining Grand Prix racing has been renewed.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably becaude rival company, BYD, has also activaly starting to try and find a way into Formula 1, with the group\u2019s vice-president, Stella Li, attending last year\u2019s Abu Dhabi Grand before being spotted, last weekend, during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.<\/p>\n

The fact Formula 1 has now decisively moved into hybrid power has encouraged BYD and Geely to enter the sport, as, according to Chinese sources, they\u2019re both considering expanding their brand from electric to hubrid road cars.<\/p>\n

Being in Grand Prix racing would be a great way to promote their brands, but it\u2019s unlikely any of those groups will be in a position to design, develop and build a completely new Power Unit in time to be used under the current set of regulations.<\/p>\n

With, therefore, an engine supply being out of the question for the next three years, the Chinese manufacturers would have a few different alternatives to consider. The first one would be to create their own team, as Cadillac has done, to start from zero, using another manufacturer\u2019s Power Unit for the first three or four years of operation.<\/p>\n

The second option would be to buy an existing team \u2013 Alpine may still be up for sale and it\u2019s not out of the question Red Bull decides to capitalize on the huge investment made in Racing Bulls and collect a couple of billion Euros by selling the Faenza-based team.<\/p>\n

The third alternative would be to simply invest in a sponsorship deal, as Alfa Romeo did with the Sauber team between 2018 and 2023. In this case, BYD or Geely would be simply getting the naming rights of the team they would be associated with, but there would no transfer of technology between the two parties, in what would be an entirely marketing-based operation.<\/p>\n
